Commercial Description:
Old Woody has been brewed in the style of English Old Ales. We have aged this beer in oak wine casks for six months before bottling it. Old Woody will age well for several years if stored in a cool dark cellar. Serve only lightly chilled, with a strong cheese and a hearty loaf of bread.

22oz. bottle. Mild but enticing fruity, sweet aroma, with notes of toasty malt, red grape, pomegranate, bready dough, flowery perfume, toffee, oak, medicinal alcohol and a touch of hop spice. Rather complex, ultimately. Hazy medium deep amber color, head is fine and subsiding. Flavor is gently bitter and indeed a bit woody to start, becoming maltier, sweet and fruity, with a lightly warming, berryish finish and lingering hints of spruce. Very smoothly effervescent and mellow on the palate, body is nicely full. Subtle and tasty. Thanks to theisti for sharing.

12oz bottle. 2005. Aroma: Rich caramel, toasted malt, almonds, raisins. Lots of oak. Significant alcohol note. Appearance: Deep rusty brown in color and clear. Off-white head was full and foamy with good retention. Nice lacing. Flavor: Big oak note upfront. Vanilla, smoke, caramel, toasted nuts, dried fruits. Alcohol is a little hot at times. Starts sweet, a touch of bitterness midway through, and then finishes fairly dry. Palate: Medium-full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Lots of alcohol warmth in back of mouth and into throat. Overall: The name ain’t kidding. Strong oakiness throghout. A nice sipper. Alcohol could be toned down a touch.

poured clear chestnut with frothy white head. nose of aged malt, toffee, tobacco, peat, vanilla, raisins, and smoke. super thick malty flavors...lots of peat and smoke and sticky sweet and chewy caramel., thick creamy mouth, but seriously, it couldn’t get any maltier than this...this is a malt monster. there’s significant hop backing that is balanced and not overwhelming, but i think the beer could do without it though it might contribute to its aging, which i would highly recommend because this shit is going to be off the hook in 3 years. the alcohol is somewhat hot and if not for the hop bitterness, it could work with the maltiness...but hot bitterness is a slight distraction here. i dig it though.

Bottle sampled at the Columbus tasting (05): Amber pour here with a wispy white head. Booze up front, white raisin, some vanilla. Flavor is sticky sweetness with dark fruit and booze. Sticks around for awhile. Definitely a sipper.

Bottle 05. Pours a dark rusty brown color with a small tan head. Aroma is sweet malts, raisins, brown sugar. Flavor is sweet malts, raisins, brown sugar, alcohol, plums. Palate is full bodied, mild carbonation, finished sweet and warming. Very good stuff, still on the boozey side.
