Beerlando (1122), Orlando, Florida, USA May 11, 2008 Pours a hazy reddish-brown color with a foamy, cream colored head. Settling slowly, a craggy gathering of bubbles forms at the edge, with sticky rings and flares of lace in tow. The aroma shows big-time toffee notes, with caramel, oaky vanilla, and glazed biscuit providing for a symphony of rich malts. There is a piney hoppiness, as well as a note of dark rum that works quite well with the vanilla. The flavor continues these same themes, with big toffee and caramel malts being massaged by luxurious vanilla and oak. There are hints of white wine lurking deep within, emerging for brief periods, only to fade away again quickly. The piney hops provide a nice balance, though this one still lands on the malty side of things. Medium-full bodied and smooth, it goes down easy for such a big beer. Feels creamy on the tongue. Alcohol is more detectable in the nose than in the mouth. Overall, very solid. The barrel aging really sets this one apart. Exactly what I’m looking for in an Old Ale.
Angeloregon (1464), Portland, Oregon, USA Jul 3, 2008 On tap at Belmont Station--Poured a deep orange-golden-amber body wtih a soft, fluffy whitish head. Nose of sweet malts and wood (hence the name). Rich, citrus, astringent flavor. Finished very dry. Complex, bold, busy flavor that might need to age longer, but quite delicious nonetheless. BeerVirgin72 (553), C-Bus, Ohio, USA Jun 30, 2008 Bottle shared at Cbus tasting 11. Poured a hazy amber color. Kind of a boozy grape smell. Taste was sweet and malty with a slow alcohol burn. I actually liked this one very much and it was one of my favorites of the evening. WeeHeavySD (1491), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jun 11, 2008 Bomber from Suzygreenberg, shared with my girlfriend Cyn. Pours cloudy orange brown with a tan head. The nose is sweet and oaky. The taste is sweet with notes of rich malts, caramel, and wood. Overall quite nice, slightly boozy with hints of greatness. pnista (861), Bloomington, Indiana, USA May 31, 2008 Thanks for sharing another gem Yaniv! Pours a hazy sort of reddish brown with a dense thin light tan head. Sweet nutty nose. Low alcohol. Round, like a brown ale. Creamy smaller bubbles and a bit of substance. Sweet round malt. Some alcohol. A bit of mapley sweetness. Round and smooth. A bit tannic and fruity in the finish. I’m a big fan of Fish Tale! puzzl (1623), New York, New York, USA May 30, 2008 Bottled. Pours with virtually no head. Oak aromas waft across the room. Pine, maple syrup. Flavor is mellow, boozy, rough and woody. A lot of alcohol. A tough drinker, and not very complex.
