Good lacing and it stains the glass as it drips. Aroma is thick and vinous and has roasted cherry, chocolate, some kind of dry clay type of thing, pineapple, and coffee. Taste is also thick... sort of a cherry sweetened grapefruit hop, brown sugar, chocolate, pineapple, smokey meat, and sour wine. Finishes a little bitter with coffee. Overall, I agree it is a little too vinous, but it is still very good. frylock (1029), Buffalo, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 1, 2004 Batch No.4, bottled Nov. 2002. Chocolate, molasses, oaky, vinous aroma. Black body with a small tan head. Tart red wine bite, leads into some cocoa and some dry and bitter roasted barley flavors. Some warmth in the finish. Very flavorful, but too heavy on the vinous notes. None the less a nice beer to celebrate my arrival to Oregon HumuloneRed (750), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 31, 2004 Bottle. Great hop and malt balace in the nose and taste. Earthy, some chocolate and big roasty coffee notes. Get you get a lot more flavors as it warms. Way to drinkable at 10% hopdog (5630), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 30, 2004 Batch #4 bottled on November 2002. Poured with a large, thick brown head. With the strong wine smell, you can definitely tell this was aged in Wine casks. Other aromas; roasted, coffee, sweet and woody. Strong wine flavor with subtle hints of coffee and molasses. Different tasting Imperial Stout. temporrari (327), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 27, 2004 Updated: Mar 15, 2008Batch IV, 2002. Black pour with a light brown head. Aroma of wood and wine mostly. Flavor is rich with chocolate, definately oak, grapes, kind of sweet, especially the finish. The alcohol is well masked. There is a great stout underneath all the wine barrel characteristics, I’d like to know what it tastes like aged without the wine. I also hear the previous year was much better. Its okay, I don’t like the wine flavor. This was a disappointment overall. A blind tasting confirmed my general dislike for this beer and wine barrel aging. lilannie (384), State College, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma: chocolate, wine barrels, oak, coffee, seaweed, and red grapes
Appearance: very dark brown, tan head, thick, lacing
Flavor: very rich flavors of oak barrels, sweet grapes, grape juice, sugar, and chocolate. very fizzy and tastes like the color purple would taste
Palate: very smooth, sweet, sugary, with a strange sweet aftertaste (like grape juice)
Overall: interesting, not like an Imperial Stout though unclebleen (620), California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 21, 2004 Pours a jet-black color with a nice and creamy-looking mocha head atop. Lacing is excellent. Aroma is chocolate malt and coffee with a rather wine-like hop character. Quite interesting I must say. Flavor mirrors the almost wine-like notes with a really great bitter and roasted flavor. Full round body with a great bitter finish. Wow, this is really good stuff! Vac (2394), San Diego, California, USA

The aroma is slightly sweet yet sour, bitter and roasty with a slight licorice note. The flavor is slightly sweet yet sour and vinious with a slightly bitter roasty note. Full bodied, slightly tingly, relatively smooth and warming.
