Aroma is amazing....coffee, wine and fruit. Taste is a mix of wine and beer. Coffee, red wine and fruit. Mostly sweet, with a slight bitter/tart finish. Alcohol is well hidden. Very different than anything I’ve ever had. I like it a lot. I think this would be a good celebration type beer. Thanks to derekarent for trading me this one. | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | May 13, 2004 Beautiful opaque black body with dark tan head. Rich aroma of roasted coffee, chocolate, and hints of oak cask bourbon. But the flavor left me cold. Very disappointing that the visual and the olfactory appeal did not translate into good flavor. Stouts are my thing but this was the first highly touted stout that disappointed. beerinmarch (2829), Washington, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Apr 17, 2004 This shit is black as night. Amazingly dark with little bubbles on the inside of the glass. Chocolaty brown head. Sweet and woody aroma. The flavor is sweet and strong. Tangy on the tongue, woody and smoky with a tart aftertaste. Pretty nice. fly (1333), austin, Tejas, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 14, 2004 After having this at the tail end of different tastings and NOT appreciating it, intentionally bought bottle to push to beginning of tasting. NOW can say I finally get what people that like this were saying. Very interesting, unique flavor/malt/hop combinations never experienced by me in other beers. I mean I suppose that can be said of all beers, but not in the way I mean about this one. Not exactly revelatory, nor is it my favorite, but enjoyed. What personality embodied in a beer. Much like many of my friends. JenT (10), Austin, Texas, USA

I picked out a cherry port molasses flavor with similar aroma. The slight cherry flavor made it seem like a nice hearty port. harlequinn (2745), Tacoma, Washington, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 11, 2004 This is unlike any other imperial stout that I have ever had. This like the Leviathan, has the same overpowering oak barrel, accompanied by a strong wine taste and body. Still very well balanced and complex, with lots of wine, rum and chocolate. The hops are a very nice afterthought, giving another level of depth to this already uncharacteristic stout. Definitely one to sip on a cold night. kbjames (242), Utah, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 29, 2004 This is a very unique imperial stout. The wine taste really overpowers the stout properties in this beer. And with the ABV it is no lite weight. Would have preffered more roast and traditional stout flavors to arise from the wine taste
