Pours black with a rich brown head. Aromas of salt and chocolate with some nice oak character. Quite fruity with raisin and cherry. Oak, roast and chocolate come through great. Oxidation is setting in, and it adds another nice layer. Oily and thin. Liquour like.
A well aged beer. Thanks for sharing this rarity, Mike. Ofortuna (322), Grafton, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 20/20 | May 21, 2007 Updated: Aug 25, 2007One of my all-time favourite brews and shocked that the ratings are not higher! Had the good fortune of being given a bottle to take home with me from the outstanding folks at the Stumbling Monk in Seattle. Of course, this after visiting them nearly everday of my trip and partaking of this masterful brew every chance I had. THIS is exactly what wine-barrel aging a beer should aspire to be. Brilliant use of Columbus and Cascades to balance out the malt complexity. Beautiful use of the oak and grapey red-wine flavours permeate throughout the entire experience, but never overpowering. Only complimentary and adding to the overall tapistry of flavours which gradually present themselves over time. If you ever happen to be fortunate enough to find a bottle of this grab them all! Then, please mail some to me as I need to have more of this!!!!! drpimento (842), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA

Poured with a smallish head that was textured, light tan. Good lace. Hops remind me hallertau. Personally care for this type of bittersweet. Great body. Sneaky alcohol bomb. long finiish. Excellent beer! drewbeerme (2299), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 6, 2007 Updated: Jul 22, 2009750ml, 2002. sampled on 8/20/06. huge thanks to holdenn for bringing this back from Seattle. pours black with the slightest red tint and tan head that didn’t last long. nose is has tones of of merlot wine, cherries, and bakers chocolate. taste notes has red wine holding the dark chocolate, vanilla, and roasty notes. the beer tends to become too much because it finishes with too much sweet merlot. perhaps a drier red or pinot would have been better. alcohol was very well hidden. mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, full, silky smooth, and rich.4.1..
3/14/09, 2002 Magnum from Kan! pours black with creamy tan head. looks great. nose of cardboard, red wine, and wood. flavors of cardboard, soy, chocolate, red wine, dark fruit. this is shame, a once great brew aged to spoil, the aged malts + red fruity wine notes = disaster. maybe your bottles are aged better but this magnum didn’t hold up.5/5/5/3/12=3.0. 4/27/09, a 750 shared by holdenn! batch 4 ’02, this one was much better than the magnum, oddly, probably better storage conditions but this had that nice merlot and chocolate malt thing going on well. 4.0. waolsen (1223), Littleton, Colorado, USA

Extremely complex and one of the most unique imp. stouts I’ve tried. The cabernet barrel aging adds a soury sweetness and an oaky finsh. This stout doesn’t overpower me w/ coffee, chocolate, or alcohol. It’s the perfect, subtle balance of all w/ a mild sour finish. It’s @ its prime. brentfeesh (1039), Gadsden, Alabama, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 2, 2007 Bottle purchased from MrRomero (I think) before his move to Germany. 2002 bottle, 750ml. Pours deep walnut color and opaque with a light brown head. The aroma is vinous, acidic with a chocolate hint. There are also some funky notes that are a bit Flanders ale like. The flavor is quite unique and I was surprised at how well this has held on over the years. Tart cherries with chocolate. Still some semi-sweet hints. Very light funk to this one. It’s still complex, vinous and enjoyable. I still say you could taste some light candy and caramel to this. The body was light-medium and a bit slick. This is by far the oldest beer I have yet to enjoy. A real treat that I was happy to ring in the New Year with. crizay (1050), Brook Park (was Tampa,FL), Ohio, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 12, 2006 Thanks Degarth. Dark black pour huge brown head that fills like a guinnes that had an insane bead dancing around on top of the foam (Degarth & IBrew2or3 will back me on that). Aroma is very sour and wine like. The very tart wine taste nails your tongue at first but then the roasted malts start to come through with coffee beans bigtime in the aftertaste. Very tart and fruity but the real flavor is in the aftertaste that’s where the chocolate and roasted malts come through with coffee also. Very creamy and smooth wine like stout, not a bad idea. Not bitter at all and can’t detect any hops. Great beer.
