1/02/2008: Fish Tale Poseidons Imperial Stout Reel Ale has a great faling head that is large, tan in color, and foamy and produces excellent lacing. This beer has a deep, dark amber-brown color. I actually expected it to be black, but that’s okay since the flavor makes up for the lack of color depth! The aroma contains semi-sweet chocolate and the flavor is a wonderful blend of chocolate and hints of char. It is dry, but balanced. The body is medium-full and it is smooth, soft, and mellow on the palate. Overall this is an impressive Imperial Stout that is very flavorful and easy to drink.

22 fl. oz./650 mL bottle (8% alc./vol.) from Yonker65. Thanks Bruce! Rating #221 for this beer...

Bottle sample with/from shigadeyo. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted and produced excellent lacing. Heavy roasted malt, chocolate and coffee aroma. Medium to full body with a dry texture. Good complex roasted flavor with a medium roasted bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Good complex standout brew.

2004 bottle tasted December 2007

Served straight out of the cellar (on the warm end of cellar temperature.) Pours deep deep brown with a tan head. Big roasty aroma, chocolate and soy sauce, some alcohol fumes on the nose, a bit of smoke. Flavor is chocolate with that soy sauce twist, brazil nuts, licorice and mild smoke and salt, a whisper of vanilla bean. At this age the hops are far in the background, leaving only a slight hint of oxidization and contributing modestly to the roast-coffee bitterness on the finish. It pairs nicely with a 70% chocolate bar that I have sitting around. Smooth creamy mouthfeel, full body with mild carbonation.

It’s a very good beer. But in a world where we now have ready local access to dozens of imperial stouts and a half-dozen exceptional ones, this one doesn’t reach up quite into the top tier.

Black colour with a light brown head. Light roasted malty aroma with a chocolate/ vanilla sweetness and notes of dark fruit. Malty, sweet and quite fruity flavor with a sweet finish with vanilla notes.

Pours a black color with a tan head. Aroma is of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, molasses, and sweet malts. Flavor was good at first with all the same but doesn’t really have a complexity that I would expect from an Imperial stout. Not a strong finish. Good but not great.

2006 Bottle. Pours black with a small ring of head that leaves little lacing. Aroma of alcohol, coffee, caramel, and licorice. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium slightly thin mouthfeel with a moderate to strong amount of bitterness and nice alcohol warmth on the finish. Not very complex but very good.
