Dark black color with almost no head. Flavor of sweet chocolate, with a bitter aftertaste. Quite viscous. Not my favorite stout.

Batch #5, bottled 11/04. 12oz., and first beer of brew day at Book_M_Dano’s house. Pours opaque mahogany color with wispy, quick to disappear head. Nice aroma. Sweet with wood hints and lightly metallic. The flavor has wood, bitter bakers chocolate, nicely balanced and a bit forward bittering hops (well matched to the malt bill which is rather burnt in flavor). Very light sweetness as it opens up. Oily mouth feel and fine bitter dryness in the finish. Very enjoyable! Can’t wait to try the better rated Batch #4!

12 oz. bottle. Light black motor oil body with no head at all. Aroma of chocolate with rock candy. Flavor is chocolatey with rock candy, but finishes rather bitter, a bit too bitter I thought. Palate is quite smooth. A very good beer, but not the best in a very tough style.

12 oz bottle. Thanks FlySwatter! Great place for food and drink, too, went to Olympia in March, 2005. Dark brown with some head, not much lacing. Really inviting aroma of roast and malty sweetness. Some higher alcohols come off, too. Nice roasty flavor with some of that alcohol but it is pleasant, especially with the hop flavor and bitterness mixed in. Definite chocolate flavor with a creamy finish. Great beer.

Deep brown with a small, creamy brown head. Aroma is sweet, floral and vinous. Flavors of bitter hops, dark roasted malt, molasses, chocolate and dark fruit. Thick and syrupy with a woody, earthy finish that actually rounded it out very nicely.

(Bottle) Thick dark brown with a great head. Nice aromas with floral all through out the flavors. Loved the hop flavor in this beer. This was a grab you by the goodies and make you think about good beer type beer.Good God a great beer and I loved the overall flavors. 10% alcohol will grow hair on your toe nails. (BECAREFUL)

Thick, dark brew - nearly no head at all. The aroma is slightly astringent and alcoholic, tempered with molasses and chocolate, dates and prunes. The finish is strangely woody and a little too syrupy sweet. The flavor is decent: warm, wintery fruits and chocolatey-rich.

I’ve had some of this sitting around the house for nearly a year, thinking I was aging the barrel-aged version - since it turns out I’m not, I figured I’d drink the stuff - Nearly opaque with a light tan ring of lace - vinous, port-like aroma, with roasted malt and alcohol - nice mild sweetness, tempered by a smokey, woody quality and a touch of bittering hops - a bit thin for an imperial, but I do dig the pronounced smokiness that sets this apart from others - bittersweet chocolate is the second most prominent flavor - bitter, nearly dry finish - distinct, but not great like the BA version - why did they stop aging it in wine barrels?
