Good nose, sweet & roasty, Viny, milk, cocoa, dried fruits (cherry, prune, raisin). You can smell the strength. Little to no head. Reddish, brownish black color. Minor lacing. Bitter sweet roast flavor, like aroma. Viney, cocoa mainly with cherry. Medium body, oily creamy mouthfeel, bitter warming finish. Nice brew, drinkable even with the 10%. Still has heat. Very dark brown (almost black) with a diminishing purple head - Something I’ve never seen before. Very heavy alcohol aroma, which is unfortunately masking everything else. Strong alcohol flavour with some sweetness, very creamy mouthfeel. Reminds me very much of a port wine. Not my favorite... OKBeer (1159), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 30, 2005 Updated: Jan 2, 200812 oz. bottle, Batch No. 5 bottled November 2004. Opaque dark brown colour with ruby highlights and a mostly diminishing creamy tan coloured head. Cappaccino and chocolate aroma buried by heavy alcohol and notes of licorice. Roasty, alcohol, licorice, bourbon, and light chocolate flavours. Medium to full bodied, creamy mouthfeel with an almost watery finish. Poseidon? No, too boozy. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 26, 2005 Practially black, yet seemingly more brownish in most light. Thin but thick set dark tanned, evenly firm foam sits atop and hardly moves from there. Laces in thinnly placed sheeting.
Big time waft of oaky bourbon drenched in dark chocolate with nice little notes to sweetness in molasses, dark cherry, raisin, and prune.
Smooth taster, bold, lavish, chocolate sets the tone in the front with a softer, sweet dark fruity backing of raisin and fig.
Slips to coffee roast and burnt barely. Staying smooth.
Turns to a bittering chocolate and hop dance as it finishes.
Chocolate returns late, softening the bitter blow a bit.
Bitterness still intertwines the palate with a well-rounded warmth from the decadently easy alcohol that sifts through the chocolate.
Feel is smooth and silky with a great chocolate body and low carbonation level that speaks to the point of most Imperial Stout-types. Full, rich, evenly heavy, and continuing smooth. Oh so smooth...
A very nice stout. Big, chocolatey, rich, and inticing. Fish Tales’ Poseidon’s Imperial Stout sea is some smooth sailing. Going across it is a cinch. TheEnemy (422), Chicago, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 24, 2005 12oz bottle, "Batch No. 5, Bottled November 2004." Deep reddish brown, small tan head that fairly quickly recedes to the rim and leaves small bits of lace on the sides. Lovely warm malty and light coffee-roast aroma is almost reminiscent of a barleywine. Flavor is not as malt forward and is instead pretty standard Impy stout fare -- deep roasted grain followed by a good dose of sweet malt and finally a medium hop bitterness. Solid mouthfeel, medium palate. Pretty fine beer. pinkzambia (989), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 21, 2005 Bottle: This is my kind of stout because I prefer the more hoppy, astringent and bitter aftertaste. This is a powerful beverage. The aromas are those of burnt nuts, dark chocolate and charcoal. It is dark with a brown head and sticky lacing. The flavors are burnt flavors as well as coffee. But with all of this intensity mentioned, the stout remains soft and smooth. I really enjoyed this stout, perhaps, more than the maltier favorite stouts on this site. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 10, 2005 bottle of batch 5, thanks to my 2005 secret santa and also CaptainCougar. rich sweet chocolate and roast aroma, not much of an alcohol aroma, but more like an alcoholic, sugared-up chocolate cup of starbuck’s best. this is a fine, fine american imperial stout, with plenty of clean northwestern "C" hops in the finish. i’m glad i still have a second bottle! thanks santa and Tom.
