jazz88 (2206), San Francisco, California, USA Nov 9, 2006 Growler in December 2005. A dark brown in color but also slighly cloudy in the light. A blueberry aroma with a hint of smoke and lots of blueberry in the flavor along with chocolate and some toasted malts. Very smooth. Thanks to robertsreality for giving this to me at Barley Johns! Nuffield (2541), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Dec 27, 2005 Thanks to whoever it was that gave us the growler! Really nice head, curious cream-and-blue color. Aroma has blueberries of front, smoke behind it. The sour edge of the blueberries remains but there’s a good bit of balance here. Opaque brown with fair carbonation. Good blend of the two flavors though I didn’t really care for the sour note. (growler from brewpub) CharlesDarwin (1409), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 5, 2005 Updated: Dec 7, 2005Coarse dark root beer-esque pour, with a creamy equally frothy head and lacy tanness. Blackberry candles and a hint of raspberry chocolate, lightly eminating from the aroma. Flavor is a bit sour and bubbly. Flavor is actually somewhat bland. Light blueberry candy/wine over a gently roasted malt. Palate is salty, corase and way too dry. I would have a expected a silky smooth richness to this beer. Evaporating airy palate takes this beer away too soon. If I didn’t know better, I’d say this brew was overattenuated and came out entirely too thin bodied. RETASTED. Two days later, this beer had more heft, more body and more flavor. It was silky, the head was darker, the blueberries really shone through in that fresh wild blueberries on the side of the road flavor, with a hint more chocolate and sugar. Don’t know what was up with that first round. badgerben (3160), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Dec 31, 2004 Small bottle poured under the table, brought back by robertsreality. Murky color with no head. Sugary sweet aroma with a bit of malt; odd start to a porter... Very bitter and dry fruit up front. The fruit is definitely more of a general "fruit" taste than blueberries in particular. Eh, not bad. It’s undoubtedly better fresh from the tap. muzzlehatch (4424), Burlington, Vermont, USA Dec 30, 2004 Sample at the brewpub. You know you’re in the presence of mastery when you’re looking forward to a fruit beer...oily dark brown, head doesn’t last...awesome fresh warm blueberry pie nose, sweet with touches of cinnamon and vanilla and a nice underlying biscuity crust...vinous body, blueberries staying centerstage, chocolaty and somewhat roasty finish..fairly acidic, a touch syrupy and with an unfortunate hint of cardboard just at the finish. Still very good, and the nose is up there with New Glarus’ fruit masterpieces...
