Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

12 oz bottle. Root beer pour with an off white head. Caramel malty nose, some cocoa and light roast. Cocoa comes to the fore when tasting, mildly roasty and a woody note. Nice lace, body just on the light side of medium. A nice drinker.

Bottle. Dark brown. Smells of burnt toast with a slight aroma of raisin. Taste of molasses, dark toast. Great exmaple of this beer.

BOTTLE: looks like Coke in the glass, maybe slightly darker. Off-white head. Looks thin when pouring. Wondering if we got a bad bottle - nose is somewhat sour, taste is sour, pepper, molasses, but not very good. Not consistent with others’ rating of this beer at all.

11.2 oz bottle, Market of Choice. Pours a dark brown with a bit of tan head and lacing. Aroma of chocolate and roasted coffee. Flavor much the same, mouthfeel a bit lighter than I’d prefer. Solid porter though.

12 oz. bottle - Malty and smooth. Low carbonation led to a great mouth feel. Very smooth. Molasses with a bit of burned sugar throughout. Very little hop presence. Sweet but semi dry finish. A very nice porter.

Bottle pours deep brownish and black with a creamy brown head. Slight boozy aroma but deep burnt sugar, plum and oak notes. Nice dryness on the tongue followed by coffee and tobacco flavors. Nice body and quenching too. Almost a smoked porter. VERY nice.

Pours deep ruby-tinged mahogany into an English pint. Mocha head with good retention pancakes as it recedes. Roasted chocolate aromas. Silky with nuts, chocolate and coffee upfront. Thinning out to a dry abrupt malt finish.
