On draught at the Happy Gnome in St Paul, MN. Pours an opaque near black brew with a decent creamy off-white head that has a slow dissolve and leaves behind an excellent lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, dark roasted crystal malt, a touch of coffee and vanilla. Taste is full bodied, very light carbonation, smooth, silky and creamy with more flavors of dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malt. Finish is just as smooth as its flavor, with a slight dry bitter aftertaste in the finish. I’ve been watching this small brewery since it started a year ago. The first few brews have been average at best, until recently. Their Bermuda Triangle started to pique my interest. This Cygnus X-1 Canadian Porter is at the time I am writing this their best brew! Keep up the excellent progress Jeff. This beer will go places!

5/14/08. This one didn’t suffer from bottle bomb but it did have a lot of carbonation. I chilled it for a couple days in anticipation of an overflow but instead I just got a huge head on the first pour. Its a very dark brown with a fluffy, light brown head. It smells mostly of roasted grains and light chocolate malts but I get a slight bit of hoppiness and smoke on the tail end. The taste is really complex and well blended. Similar to the smell with a pronounced bitterness at the end. The mouthfeel was a little thin and this was definitely over carbonated but it seems like they are on the way to fixing that. This could easily be one of the best porters I’ve tried to date.

ABR ’08 - Pours hazy reddish brown with a tall and dense foamy head. The nose is roasted malt with light fruit and burned malt notes. Comes across the palate medium bodied with roasted malt and fruit combined also with yeast and a burned.. Dry and lightly malt bitter finish with some alcohol showing

Bomber pours nearly black with aggressive tan head... Gusher actually, pretty aggressive carbonation. Once it finally settles, it has a roasty-coffeeish nose with some toasted dark rye. Well-balanced flavor, with a dry roasty bitterness and very light touch of chocolate sweetness, interesting but very drinkable. That little touch of rye-bready sourness adds a nice character. Carbonation is a bit much.

Very black body with a light khaki head. Chocolate with some light coffee. The taste is mocha with some light tobacco. Nice roast with a slightly woody finish. A nice smooth porter.

Deep reddish, brown colour with a beige head. Light roasted and dark fruity aroma with earthy and hoppy notes. Light sweet and earthy flavor with dark fruity notes.
