| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 16, 2008 22oz bottle. Pours a deep copper with barely a head. Nice hop aroma with some malt. Crisp flavor with mostly hop, but not so much that it does not fit the style. Pretty good, and waaaaay better than I was expecting. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 30, 2008 A nice steam beer (I refuse to call it California Common). Aroma was so so. There’s a spiciness to it that I wasn’t expecting. Pour was a beautiful clear amber with a puffy one finger near tan head. Clear and crisp. Taste was good but odd. There is a strong astringent bitterness to it that I don’t associate with steam beer. The hops create a resinous film on the throat that don’t let any malt through. Not bad. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 19, 2008 Sample at the holiday beer tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 11/13/08. Pours a clear orange color with a medium thin and foamy light beige head that diminishes steadily. Dense spots of lacing. Sweet malt and yeast aroma with notes of citrus. Light body with a decent amount of hops flavor, as well as fruit and malt undertones. The finish is mild hops and citrus, leaving a fruity aftertaste. While probably not among the best Steam beers I have tried, it was better than expected. theisti (1681), Leawood, Kansas, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 20, 2008 The body was dark gold amber with a light khaki colored head. The aroma was strong with buckwheat pancakes. This was overall earthy. The taste was lightly bitter with some bread crust. There was also a little bit of walnuts. Decent. Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing.
Body is medium amber.
Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (apricot, orange), trace yeast (basement), with light notes of dried mango and black tea.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly astringent.
Decent stuff, and thankfully not infected. In a blind tasting I would guess a British bitter or an APA. Interesting and enticing subtlety in the nose (dried tropical fruit and black tea stand out), and a good quaffing balance. Not exactly exciting, but definitely solid.
