| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jun 13, 2008 12oz Bottle. Noses with a bit of NyQuil drizzled over chocolate roast malt. Somewhat medicinal. Somewhat yeasty. Some light maple sugar tang marries with porter roast and a lick of sourness. Confused. Pours a red-tinted mahogany, with a good rim of coffee foam head. Flavor edges vacuous. Seltzer water carries a harsh, astrigent edge of ashy roast. I think of wood stoves and old paper. Much too charred and burnt for any respectable porter. Seemingly hot, too. A touch of gummy hopness adds to this mess. Not good. Astringent. The roast character in this beer is just off. Faintess bit of Maple candy finally shows in the smack, but it’s too late. iowaherkeye (1873), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 7/20 | Mar 11, 2008 12oz bottle, no date. Black with a small tan head, fading to a ring within seconds. Burnt malts, maple and hazelnuts next, and hints of cocoa in the background. Also a bit of soy. Flavor is watered down ash and wet paper. Some roast is present in the mildly bitter finish, but there really is nothing else. There is no maple sweetness, just paper and burned things. Thin body with low creamy carbonation. Not a good beer. | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 5, 2008 MBG Winter Fest 2008. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate toasted malt and maple aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium sweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met. MI2CA (1266), Noblesville, Indiana, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 31, 2007 12oz - Aroma is mild roasted chocolate malt and maple syrup. Pours black with a small head and decent lacing. Flavor matches aroma. Palate is thin and clean. After the bock I was expecting a bit more. Maybe the "porter" in the name tricked me a little as I was expecting more roasted malt. Not offensive, just nothing special. polomagnifico (535), Saginaw, Michigan, USA
| 2.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/20 | Oct 28, 2007 Wow, aroma had notes of catbox for crying out loud, gross. Looked good though with a black/brown body and brown head. Really nice smoke flavors and I did detect a little maple syrup but there was a noticeable funk that just threw everything off. Palate was watery. I had this at a tasting and I’m hoping that this was just a bad growler. The guy serving was a volunteer and knew nothing about beer so I’d like to see what others think of this brew. Will try again if I can find it on tap or in a 12oz.
