Draft... DLD’08... Clear, very dark, beautiful ruby ale. Vinous notes of red wine and medium sherry with lesser notes of vanilla, chocolate and sourmash. Medium to full-bodied with almost no carbonation. Sweet, chocolaty flavor. Sugary, smoky finish.

This was an interesting brew to try, whatever it is. Deep brown body. The aroma is fruity, cherries & tart berries, with a soft sweet malt and brown spices. Very smooth. The flavor has the additons of vanilla, wood, toffee... a fascinating blend of flavors. If Matt has any left, I’d like to give this another go to try to figure it out. And enjoy.

FoBAB 2007: Muddy brown with a small frothy head but no lace. The aroma has notes of cherry, blackberry, walnut, marzipan, bitter chocolates, pipe tobacco and light bourbon vapours.

The taste is confusing but really good. Hard to wrap my palate around this beer. It is one moment sour and a touch funky, the next rich and sweet then adds a charred smoky quality just to add to the mix. The mouth feel aggressive and biting with a surprisingly dry finish. I would like to sit down with a snifter of this to try to figure it all out. Easily the best Flossmoor beer I had this day.

Poured deep brown with very little head sticking around. The aroma picked up lots of sweet vanilla and bourbon sugars upfront with semi-sweet chocolate and molasses not far behind.. toasted oak provided a nice accent. The flavor had caramel, chocolate, molasses, and toffee at the core with a heavy barrel impression (vanilla, oak, and sweet bourbon.. the usual suspects).. sour fruit skins provided an enjoyable accent.. surprisingly well-balanced. Drier, grainy, and calculated on the palate with good sour contrasts.. I really dug this.

Draft at brewpub. I hate to say that not only does this not only sound like a bad idea, the results are not so good. Plenty of barrel and vanilla, booze, dried fruits, more booze and grape. Really sticky and sweet.Did I mention there was a lot of booze flavor in this? Believe it.

In short: Aggressive syrupy sipper with too much barrel presence
How: Tab at brewpub. Pre-Dark-Lord-Day party 2008
The look: Black body with a small tan head
In long: Very sweet and very syrupy. Lots of barrel, lots of black liquorice, more barrel, lots of black liquorice, vanilla, dark fruits concentrate, more barrel, dark toffee and molasses. I don’t know what the abv is on this thing but it is too much. All that barrel gave it a single-malt whiskey character. Unpleasantly aggressive. I understand this was Flossmoor’s anniversary beer from the previous year, a beer that was aged one year in barrel. At the Pre-DLD 08 party it was served with an additional year of barrel aging. Might have been very good when first served one year ago but the beer I drank had just too much barrel in it. That’s like cooking a cake for an anniversary and keeping it in the oven for next year’s anniversary.

Draft @ Flossmoor, pre-DLD fest, covertly borrowed from nflmvp. Thank you, Steve!! Very dark, murky plum color; mostly headless with a touch of oiliness. Twiggy, bourbony, and intense dried red and dark fruits in the aroma; interesting generous stuff, if slightly messy and stemmy. Full mouthfeel: green, vegetal, stemmy, and dense; gooey dried fruits; tons going on here: first and foremost bourbon, dried red fruits, fruit leather, soft barrel notes. Lengthy finish: dried red fruits, some bourbon and toasty oak.
