Commercial Description:
This Belgian Golden Strong ale is a recipe developed by Brian Richards of MI who won the B.O.S.S. homebrew competition and was able to brew his beer here. His beer was named Biere Bella after his daughter, and we are using it for our anniversary beer. It begins with a fruity aroma from the unique Belgian yeast. The medium-bodied maltiness is balanced with a slight spicy flavor and a hint of ripe fruits or honey in the background. The finish is clean and dry. There is a bit of alcohol warmth at the end, but please use caution as it is pretty smooth and drinkable. $4.50/snifter

Draft at The Map Room. Poured a hazy medium orange color. The head was short, bubbly, white, and reduced quickly to a lasting film. Attractive aroma of clove, pastry, and citrus (lemon greater than orange). Medium bodied and slightly sweet with noticeable alcohol warmth. Tasted of citrus liqueur, clove, a splash of sparkling white wine, and a hint of vanilla. Nice.

Draft. Rating #1512! (Okay, I need to stop this.) Nice golden Belgian pils/blonde color, slight haze and a thin head. Crisp Belgian malt smell, light on hop nose. Taste re-emphasizes Belgian maltiness, a bit of bubblegum esters, and what I thought was a touch of wheat. Further in are notes of cut grass and lemon. Bitterness is present but does not stand out. Everything is in excellent balance, which is not easy to do in a strong beer, let alone a Belgian one.

Draft at the brewpub. Congrats on the anniversary! Pours a cloudy almost opaque golden thick honeyish hue. Small head that is still pretty. Aromas are largely of spicy belgian yeast and a nice fruity sweetness. Initial is a bit underwhelming in alcohol content (Surprising), with some very nice belgian yeast, spiciness, and a nice honey sweetness with a touch of fruit. Sweetness balances the begian yeast well. A very nice beer indeed!

Snifter served at the brewpub. Poured a fairly clear, light gold hue with a foamy, white clingy head which reduced down to a small 1/2" ring of lace. Besides the light citrus and spice aroma, detected a little nuttiness. Light malt sweetness & hop dryness balanced with a little yeasty/banana flavor. Creamy mouthfeel throughout. Not overly alcoholic taste for 9% abv., but presence was felt. Pleasant!

On tap at Flossmoor Station. Pours nice light golden in color with billowing white head. Aroma is of grains and yeast. Flavor is on light side with light malts, grain and yeast. This is a nice refreshing ale with some citrus. On the light side for the styly but enjoyed quite a bit for the style.

I had this at the Mug Club tapping and on subsequent visits. It pours a cloudy dark straw body with a short head. The nose is yeasty and has cherries, lemon, alcohol, warm spices, and an underlying pale malt sweetness. The flavor has a light funky sourness to it and a touch more alcohol. Later visits added some soft bananas to the mix. Not bad.

Pours a very cloudy golden with very little head and plenty of yeast still in suspension. This should settle out given time and rest, and I’ll rerate then. The nose is spicy/fruity/yeasty/and alcoholic. Very pleasant spicy fruitiness is the first impression...largely due to the copious amounts of yeast still floating around. Nice honey sweetness present to balance the Belgian spices. The big ABV is always present but nicely tucked away in the background, moving forward only in the finish as a slight burn on the back of the palate. Very enjoyable brew...I just wish it were mine.

On tap at the Station 7/10/08. Based upon the 10 and 11, I had pretty high expectations for this one. Pours a hazed yellow hay color with a white head. Yeasty citrus, grain, spice, herb, and a subtle funk. Lemons, yeast, Belgian spices in the flavor. Its a little overly sweet and definitely overly spicy. A bit odd of a beer that’s mediocre overall.
