Sampled at the Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beer at Goose Island, Nov.11, 2005. Dark opaque black coloured with a moka head. Sweet cholate cherries in aroma, with notes of vanilla. Rather sour stout with choclate in background, and almost white wine qualities in finale. Pleasant surprise. Medium bodied.

FoBAB 2005: Deep brown hue with a big fizzy head and some lacing. The aroma is quite inviting with the cherry pits and oaky wood versus a charred, bready and caramel mix and then you get some grapey wine and lime leaves esters. The flavor did quite match the complexity of the nose but still shown most of the unique characteristics. Starts cherry tart but finished with a sweet and chocolaty background. Lot of oaky, tannic and acidic undertones. Nicely balanced for all that is going on in the making of this brew. The feel is lush and oily, moderately sticky and finished a bit woody and dry. I dig it, what a noble attempt at something beyond the norm. Get ya some if ever the chance.

I had originally planned on putting BA Dark Lord here, but it seems more fitting to go in order, especially if it incidentally gives props to the Flossmoor folks for putting on such a great evening for us. Pours a murky, chocolate brown color; light tan head with patchy lacing. Loads of overripe cherries, nougat, caramel, and red fruit leather in the aroma; slightly tart, overripe red fruit and caramel. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: mildly tart cherries, caramel, fruit leather and overripe red fruits; relaxed carbonation; intricate, tasty stuff. Medium finish: overripe red fruits, fruit leather, and a touch of toasty oak and barrel character.

thanks to Matt of flossmoor for breaking this at the end of the pre-dld gathering. pours brown with white head. a big white wine and cherry aroma. lots of cherry with white wine finish. they work together very well in this beer. clean and smooth finish. very tasty.

Pour is dark brownish black with a thin tan head...smell is lightly roasty with some chocolate covered cherries....taste was dominated by cherry sweetness with some hints at roasty chocolate toward the finish...thanks for busting this out!!!

Pours a dark brownish red color and smells very wine like with notes of dark cherries. Taste is similar with a slightly tart vinuous cherry flavor and not really roasty like I’d expect from the stout portion, but still rich in flavor. Low carbonation and pretty enjoyable. Unique for sure.

Served black with a hint of blood red around the edges when prompted, this beer had only a tan film on top but still looked gorgeous and thick in its snifter. Nose is vinous with a coffee background, then chocolate arrives with cherry. Then wine and coffee again... undulating almost rhythmically as it touches one olfactory receptor then the next. Mild notes of clay or Play-Doh keep this from a 10. Incredibly complex flavors move seamlessly from wine to stout to kriek, all first-class flavors within a lively mouthfeel and a smooth, full body. I had the opportunity to try this at <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Events-Detail.asp?Eve but I’m glad I waited to sit and linger with it on it’s home turf.

Dark red, almost black in color. Nose is vinous with hints of cherry cough syrup and chocolate brownie. tangy on the lips, quite a body, velvety and strange. Chocolate and cherries are present, sort of swirling together the tartness and sweetness, sort of a mash of flavors, nothing like, say, a Bells Cherry Stout. Hints of sour and alcohol fire, with a quick, vinous dryness at the finish. Leaves very little aftertaste.
