Nose is vinous with a coffee background, then chocolate arrives with cherry. Then wine and coffee again... undulating almost rhythmically as it touches one olfactory receptor then the next. Mild notes of clay or Play-Doh keep this from a 10. Incredibly complex flavors move seamlessly from wine to stout to kriek, all first-class flavors within a lively mouthfeel and a smooth, full body. I had the opportunity to try this at <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Events-Detail.asp?Eve but I’m glad I waited to sit and linger with it on it’s home turf.

I like the sharp, tartness of a fruit beer and the chalky stout character with cherries just hasn’t worked for me in the past. I wasn’t expecting much from this one. The aroma has chocolate and cherries with a crisp wite wine style tartness, rich vinous notes. Some wood, but hard to pick out. The cherry stands out more as I swirl it around. I am impressed so far. Dark brown with just a tiny hint of light showing through the edges when I tilt the glass and a small off-white head. Flavor is a mixture of all of the following: vinous, woody, chocolate, cherries and a tart finish. Very good. Medium full body, creamy texture. It is the tartness that does it for me. I liked this one alot. DrnkMcDermott (1859), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 15, 2004 Updated: Jan 20, 2006Re-rating from full glass, 19 Jan, 2006: I’ve now had a chance to try a full glass that’s had more time in a Chardonnay barrel. Pour is deep black; no highlights, but slightly garnet reflections. A thin head that suggests a much stronger beer. Full bodied white wine and oak flavor, like sniffing the cork offered you at as you start the wine course at a fine restaurant. Lots of cherry too. Not so much tart as borrowing a bit of stout sourness. I can’t say this is mellow and smooth, because cherries object to that. But full and fascinating.<hr>Original rating from sampler: 15 Nov, 2004: A big beer based on their Iron Horse Stout, aged on cherries in an oak white wine barrel. It also won its category in the Festival of Barrel-Aged Beer on November 6. I’m surprised no one’s rated before he poured me a sample at the pub. And I believe he spell it out the way I have it here, though I’m sure that will be corrected.
So, in a small snifter, it’s stout black with a big bubbly head. A big tart cherry taste is the first thing I noticed. Sourness begins to compete with a definite dry wine character. Finally, a somewhat chocolately dry stout flavor works its way through the crowd. Quite a complex and interesting brew. I enjoyed it even though I still can’t quite work out what I need to like in a tart or sour beer. Walt (2289), Chicago, Illinois, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 14, 2005 FoBAB 2005: Deep brown hue with a big fizzy head and some lacing. The aroma is quite inviting with the cherry pits and oaky wood versus a charred, bready and caramel mix and then you get some grapey wine and lime leaves esters. The flavor did quite match the complexity of the nose but still shown most of the unique characteristics. Starts cherry tart but finished with a sweet and chocolaty background. Lot of oaky, tannic and acidic undertones. Nicely balanced for all that is going on in the making of this brew. The feel is lush and oily, moderately sticky and finished a bit woody and dry. I dig it, what a noble attempt at something beyond the norm. Get ya some if ever the chance. holdenn (1443), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Thanks to Matt for pouring this, I love this brewpub. Pours dark brown with a soapy white head. Nose is a nice blend of sour cherries with some caramel and chocolate notes that are more subdued. Slight sweetness and chocolate in the flavor but mostly sour cherries. Really tasty. xnoxhatex (1305), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA

He said that it was about one year old and had spent about 18 months in the barrel. What a great guy. Dark brown with red color and tan head. Aroma was dark cherry that was sweet with a little grapiness. Large red fruit flavor with sour brown tones. Medium body. This has held up really well. pantanap (1363), Chicago, Illinois, USA
