This one really looked like an imperial stout with a thick all black body and a thin layer of tan cream head. The bourbon barrel aspect is strong in the aroma that also contains some soy sauce, roasted nuts, caramel malts, a marshmallow sweetness, a light booze. I thought was a nicely balanced beer overall, with some good flavors coming to life. Bourbon was big as expected, but so was the semi-sweet chocolate, marshmallow, and nutty grain malts that made for a very nice overall sweetness here with some good earthy backing hops. I really enjoyed this one. Pawola22 (752), Kansas City, Missouri, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 2, 2009 On tap at Flossmoor Station. Pours a black body with a thin, creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a light lacing on the surface, but plenty upon swirling. Aroma is sweet bourbon and wood with some rich chocolates, a good amount of vanilla, thicker caramels, and some soy. Flavor is initially greeted with a big, sweet bourbon and wood taste. A creamy vanilla and rich chocolate then comes in to mellow out the bourbon while thicker caramels and some molasses keep this pretty sweet. Finishes with a light roast that I didn’t really pick up in the aroma as well as a touch of woody bitterness. Lingers with lots of sweet bourbon and chocolate for a long duration. Light to medium body and very smooth. Overall, an enjoyable barrel aged baltic porter. Lots of bourbon, but it never becomes too overpowering and blends well with everything else. phaleslu (521), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 1, 2009 Draft at the brewpub. Pours an opaque, super dark brown color with a small brown head. Aroma of bourbon, wood, vanilla, molasses, caramel, and dark and dried fruits. Flavor was also characterized by bourbon barrel aging- vanilla and wood, with notes of molasses, chocolate, caramel, dark and dried fruits, and roasted malt. Full bodied, with an oily mouthfeel. So smooth. My favorite of the day at Flossmoor. Basically, if you like barrel aged beers, this is for you; if you don’t, you’re going to think the barrel overtakes it. msante79 (830), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 25, 2009 Served in snifter at brewpub. Pours very dark brown with small tan head. Aroma is heavy with bourbon and booze with some chocolate. Flavor was again dominated by the barrel with some chocolate, roasted malt and booze coming through. Little thin on palate. Tasted pretty much of bourbon with some chocolate and roasted malts. Alcohol seemed higher than ABV suggests. Solid BA beer but was hoping for more. Killer Kowalski is a pretty damn solid base beer but barrel just took it over. dm9831 (1167), Monee, Illinois, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 14, 2008 Big bourbon wave of aroma...sensed from across the table as my sample was poured. But there’s more to it than just that. Bourbon dominates the initial flavor, but quickly followed by chocolate, vanilla, oak, dried fruits, and burnt caramel. This is good stuff. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 25, 2007 On tap at Flossmoor Station. Poured a nice blackish hue. Smells of bourbon and chocolate. The taste is extremely pleasant. Not nearly as boozy as anticipated. Very smooth with chocolate, vanilla, and bourbon tones. I even detected a dark fruity feel. Pleasantly sweet. Extremely palatable as the alcohol isn’t as noticeable as one might have expected. npdempse (931), St. Petersburg, Florida, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 23, 2007 On tap, from the brewpub. Opaque black, small whitish head. Interesting nose--quite sweet, with some tannic notes, chocolate, raspberry, and a hint of soy. Flavor is quite sweet, a bit chocolatey, medium bitter, with a good dose of slightly smokey, boozey bourbon flavors. Slightly chalky, but overall very pleasant.
