Mini-keg courtesy of Rayboy01 at his Cajun Fais Do Do party. Smells like the Black Wolf Schwarzbier. Chocolate notes. Faint malt. Very nice flavor. A little tanniny. Very good.

Draught at the Pub 6/26/07. I came in for dinner, and upon hearing I’d have to wait until eight I stuck around to get one of the first of these served. It was worth the wait. An opaque dark brown with a healthy light brown head. Laced the glass considerably. Roast aroma with obvious rye character. Very tasty. Flavor was potently roast malt, rye was very forward and pleasantly dry.

On tap @ the Brew pub: Pours black with a fluffy tan head. Aroma, roasted malts, rye, chocolate and some burnt notes. Flavor, roasted malts, rye, spices, chocolate and some earthy bitterness on the end. Very nice beer.

Draft at the brewery. Pitch black, massive tan, rocky head and surprisingly good lacing. Dark roasted malt hits the nose initially with some nutty(?hazelnut) coffee notes. Smooth, lightly carbonated malty taste that melds well with the dry dark chocolate and coffee aspects. A nice hoppy bitter finish. Damn fine brew.

Draft at Radio Maria in Champaign, IL. Pours black with a nice creamy dark beige head. Nice aroma of rye, hops, and dark roast. Creamy mouthfeel. Flavor of dark coffee, burnt malts, and rye with a bold hoppiness. It all ties together very nicely. Dry texture on finish. Not usually a fan of hoppy stouts, but this one works.

On tap at the brew-pub. Dark black pour with decent head and lacing. Roasted coffee aroma. Very roasty flavor. Well hopped. Low CO2 and creamy mouthfeel. That all adds up to a winner in my book.

Rating #300. Good to turn to the 300s with a well crafted IL beer. Thanks to the guys at Flossmoor Station and to Tom for having this on tap at Radio Maria in Champaign. Pours a sinful black with an aroma that made me think imperial porter before I knew what it was. Palate is spicy; I think rye is one of the best additions to beer if done well. Notes of cinnamon, medium roast coffee, oats, and pecan. Well extracted and highly drinkable at 5.5.
