Commercial Description:
Fruit beers originated in Belgium and we at The Station are proud to offer our version of these continental classics. Our light-bodied Chessie Cherry Wheat is a blend of red cherries and wheat ale, which yields a slightly sweet, yet agreeably tart, fruit ale.

On tap at the brewpub. Colour is copper and reddish with a medium sized head. Oh dear god NO. Artificial and so so sweet. Strong cherry and banana notes - feels kinda sharp.

7/06/2007: Chessie Cherry Wheat Ale is a deep gold color and is hazy. It has a strong maraschino cherry aroma. The flavor is invaded by artificial cherry and some slightly sour wheat. It’s like somebody took a so-so wheat beer and stirred it with a cherry sucker until it disolved into the beer (or just added some cherry Kool-Aid mix)! The beer has a medium body and is smooth. I enjoy fruit beers that are done right, but there is something wrong with this one. It definitely is not my my cup of tea!

Draught sample at Flossmoor Station Restaurant and Brewery in Flossmoor, Illinois. Rating #43 for this beer...

On tap @ the brew pub: Pours a copper color with a white head. Aroma, cherry, fake and medicinal. Flavor, cherry, some tartness. Smooth finish.

Draught. At the brewpub. Slightly hazy amber-gold with an average white head. Sweet, cloying aroma of cheap canned cherry pie filling - ugh. Taste - also ugh, harsh fake cherry syrup, not even any balancing acidity or tartness. Average body, weakly carbonated, but it’s the ugly aftertaste taht torpedoes this one. Poor - even worse than their raspberry wheat.

Chicago trip. Saturday 12:18. Sample tray. Gentle cherry nose picks up strength has to be coaxed out. Strong cherry flavour like a cherry licorice candy. Tart fruit and hop finish.

On tap at Flossmoor. Poured a clear lighter golden with a short cap of white head and thorough lacing. I really loved the fresh cherry skins on the aroma.. some tart wheaty notes peek through, but the cherries steal the show. Flavor had a base of fresh cherry skins with tart wheat and some sweet cherry juice accents.. rather muddled finish. Lighter-bodied with a heavy enough middle.. some grainy notes with nice tartness in there.

Pours a lightly hazy golden orange with a smaller bubbly white head. Aroma of cherries, some tart wheat, lightly floral, cherry pie and a little bit artificial. Flavor of artificial cherry, cough syrup with some lingering bitterness. Did not like the flavor on this one much at all.

The Chessie wheat was the last of the true session beers. It was also very disappointing. I don’t usually have high expectation for fruit beers but this fell short of even those. While it is not as bad as a certain Polish fruit beer, it is nowhere near as good as the handful of others I’ve tried. The problem may be that it plays the fruit factor too safely.

Aroma / Appearance - The cloudy honey colored body had only a trace amount of head. The nose was a sharp reminder of Cherry 7UP with almost no complexity at all. If you concentrate there is a little bit of Hershey’s syrup hiding in the background. It is not a very inviting introduction.

Flavor / Palate - The thin watery body does not leave much of an impression on the tongue. With only a faint amount of cherry flavor, it taste more of rye bread. Any flavor at all would improve this, which places it squarely in the mediocre camp. I might be being a little generous giving it such a high score but at least I could manage to finish a pint if forced.
