This one pours very dark brown in the glass with a strong reddish tint around the edges. There’s a big thick off-white head that shows excellent retention but doesn’t leave too much lacing.
The aroma is massively spicy with the cardamom being the most dominant aroma overall. There is lots of brown sugar and dark malts in the background as well as some dark fruit sweetness.
The taste was really surprising and the initial sip had a pretty strong sourness with the caramelized sugar and Belgian yeast forming a solid backbone. The finish brings back the cardamom and leaves a spicy, peppery tingling going down with the orange peel also making an appearance.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied and highly carbonated, maybe a tad light for the style but nothing too distracting.
This is a decent beer, but I wasn’t the biggest fan of the sourness in the taste which seemed a little out of place. The spiciness in the nose was also a little overpowering. The former limits the drinkability a bit for me. goldtwins (4078), Nesconset, New York, USA Jul 24, 2009 Poured an almost clear brown-amber color with an off-white head. Yeasty and spicy aroma with notes of fruit and cloves. The flavor was tart and fruity with a light spice. Medium bodied. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Jul 17, 2009 Bottle in trade. Thanks.
Pours dark red with little head. Smell is raisin, herbs, spices. Taste is vinuous, raisin, dry tart herbal rosemary. Medium body, medium carbonation. Decent, unique, but still somewhat drinkable. Alcohol is hidden pretty well, but once was enough for this beer. daknole (2802), Plantation, Florida, USA Jul 5, 2009 Bottle shared by JW77. Rich amber pour wtih a tan head. Aroma is spicy and full of brown sugar, molasses, caramel and honey. Flavor is big and bold. Honey is noticeable. Dark dried fruit and molasses notes are nice. Good and spicy. Nice. JCB (1713), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jun 25, 2009 22oz from pimpp - thanks, Patrick! Great looking bottle and very eager to try the beer. But it’s a major disappointment, either a colossal infection or just something wrong-headed. Lovely to look at, a dark brown pour with a light fluffy head. Active, prickly carb. The nose is like generic cola, not especially off-putting but a little unexpected. I can get hints of the citrus and raisins in there but it’s mostly flat cola. The taste is actually borderline rancid - can honey spoil? If so, this is what it tastes like, acrid and dank. Maybe there is cardamom in there, maybe not. Maybe the sugars used are "exotic," maybe not. But this is a rank mess of a beer. fonefan (10868), VestJylland, Denmark Jun 9, 2009 Bottle 65cl. Clear medium to dark brown amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, spicy - cardamom. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and light moderate bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20090306] BuckeyeBoy (1639), Boise, Idaho, USA May 19, 2009 Bottle Pours out a dark amber topped with a sand head. Aroma of pit fruit, sweet molasses, and spice, Tast more of the sweet pit fuit and molasses. Along with some citrus spice. A lot going on makes this brew pretty crazy. JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA May 12, 2009 Thanks to goldtwins for sharing this. Deep brown appearance. Aroma is very intense. Loads of big molasses, cocoa and toasted rye. Rummy with a some blackstrap molasses, buckwheat honey/treacle and sweet maltiness. While the aroma is intense but suggestive of something appealing the flavour is really quite terrible. Sticky, rotten banana and peach with a lingering funky (not good funky) rancidness. Like rotten fruit mixed with fresh raisins and some lactic sourness. Freaking awful.
