17thfloor (1403), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 4, 2009 22oz bottle sampled August 2008 at 1st CST, sample #17. Pours a murky orange brown with a little head. Aroma is super bretty, malty, iron, blood, light fruit, raspberry seeds. Flavor is soapy, quite bretty, still clean and tart, light raspberry, somewhat metallic. Fairly thin bodied with nice active fizzy carbonation, some raspberry seeds maybe. Ughsmash (3981), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Oct 2, 2009 Bomber that I’ve had for a while. Poured a lovely shade of clear coppery orange with a short-ish lived cap of tight off-white head.. looked good. The aroma picked up a sweet and tart array of raspberry seeds paired with lemon zest and some wet barn-like funkage.. dry and well-presented. The flavor opened with a tangy hit of raspberry seeds and lemon zest.. the middle lacked support, but had tasty fruity sourness and dry pepper, rye, and funk around.. finished sour with the raspberries leading. Very dry on the palate with an overall grainy feel and low carbonation.. tartness and funk were moderate, and they left a refreshing feel on the finish.. interesting that it dropped off the palate quickly, with a wash of tart raspberry and lemon zest coming afterword (I dug it). Very good stuff. Davinci (295), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 20, 2009 from the First Annual Chicago Sour Tasting, thanks to Andrew.
Hazy amber pour with minimal off white head, some floaties even off the first pour. Nice, mildly sweet, fermented rasberry aroma. Nice dry tartness up front, medium rasberry flavor, mild soapiness is a little bit of a negative. Still pretty nice though. Acidity is very well balanced. A little bit of warming alcohol is a pleasant touch. Nice medium body with playful carbonation. Overall a really nice beer.
Beerlando (2284), Orlando, Florida, USA Sep 14, 2009 Red wax dipped bomber with a paper label, marked 07/08 in gold pen. Courtesy FlssmrBrewAlum. Pours a brownish-burgundy hue with refined streams of effervescing micro-bubbles visible through the haze. A minimal, foamy, reddish-tan ring forms at the surface, leaving tiny spots of lacing that slowly meander back towards the body. The aroma is quite vinous, notes of juicy, soured raspberry and strawberry coming through sharp and acidic, with an overtone of lactic acidity and mild brettanomyces funk. Clean, subtle oak barrel lends a touch of funky woodiness to the nose. Flavors are again sharp and tart, strawberry and raspberry again slicing through with crisp acidity. Bretty, woody, spicy oak lends a deliciously vinous character, peppery red wine notes coming to mind. Semi-dry and delicately carbonated, the palate is lip-smackingly appropriate for this tasty, sour brew. Great stuff. holdenn (1432), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 16, 2009 Bottle thanks to Andrew at the First Annual Chicago Sour Tasting. Pours an amber orange with a white thin head. Raspberry soapy aroma that’s light and sweet. Raspberry malt flavors that are light and tart. Leathery soapy malts that come together well. Pretty solid. Hazy coppery hue with a fizzy but lasting head and minimal lace. The aroma has notes of tart and acidic raspberries, hint of vinegar and woody funk, dry biscuit malts and even some sage. The taste has an initial explosion of tartness balanced slightly by some pale malts and wheat. Finished with a good woody and peppery undertone and no notice of mineral which I was thankful for. The mouth feel is lively and refreshing but a touch short and thin. A nice brew and surprising in the fact I thought I had rated this and just brought it along so Jeff could have a sour to try along with all those bigger malty beers. Bottle: The aroma consists of tart cherries, light vinegar, and a hint of oak. It pours a hazy amber with a moderate off-white head. The flavor starts with some light cherry with faint vinegar in the background. The finish turns mildly tart with some faint oak. Light bodied with somewhat lively, but not prickly, carbonation. Solid, but tartness is a little too mild for my preferences. drewbeerme (2224), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 23, 2009 bottle. pours auburn with no head. nose is sour, sharp raspberries, vinegar. flavors of raspberry, vinegar, and a watery thin body. pretty tasty brew.
