Came as a complete surprise, too. No one expects much from a Brown, but this one came through with swirling colors, or whatever the hell that expression is. Awesome aroma, loaded with peanut butter, cashew, and really creamy chocolate. A ton of hazelnut too. Flavor is just as rich with just a touch of hop in the finish to keep it from being cloying. Very solid. Reminds me of Rogue Hazelnut Brown but is not as dominated by the adjunct. Lovely. Beerlando (2353), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 21, 2008 Bomber. Pours a really dark mahogany color. A small but lasting, frothy, coffee colored head leaves wet, spotty lacing behind. Aromas include bittersweet chocolate and dark molasses, with notes of hazelnuts and vanilla oatmeal. Hints of pipe tobacco come and go, as do notes of dark fruit and cinnamon. Flavors fall in line for the most part, rich cocoa and smoky-sweet molasses laying the groundwork. Roasty espresso notes are soothed by silky vanilla and hazelnut. The palate is medium-full and smooth, but a little on the sweet and sticky side, causing it to drink a bit heavier than the 6% ABV indicates. Overall, this is a mighty solid nut brown that pretty much doubles as an oatmeal porter. It’s an interesting and well executed take on the style. notalush (2699), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 10, 2008 Thanks to valpoaj for sending this my way - pours more like a porter than a brown ale - dark ruby, nearly black, with a tan, two-finger head, that settles to a small film and lace - the aroma is fairly sweet, with a lot of maple and molasses - the toasted oats are apparent, and give a slightly roasty quality to the aroma as well - the roasty character is more pronounced in the flavor, and lends some coffee bitterness and an almost tobacco-ish leafy quality as well - the molasses’ sweetness swells up from under that, and becomes quite prominent, almost too much so - a bit of maple, caramel, and a bit of nutty character - caramelized sugars and toffee in the finish - this is a bit too sweet, but a tasty brown ale none-the-less. Tasty and rather full-bodied brown ale.
I like:
Original example with strong maple notes. Effective roastiness manages to attenuate the excessive sweetness. Distinctive and relatively intense. Controlled hoppiness compared to most of their other ales.
I dislike:
Certainly sweeter than most, its flavours almost reach a molasses territory. I’d prefer further developments in the toasty scope. Not particularly complex. The high scores struck me as a surprise compared to the 2.7-2.8 their other regulars gather.

Flavor is smooth and smokey. A lot of roastiness, but also some nuts. Great mouthfeel. Easily one of the best Brown ales i’ve ever had. grandridge (222), Port Clinton, Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 27, 2008 Bomber, pours dark brown with aroma of caramel and smoke. Flavor is sweet and smooth. Caramel dominates but some smoke and chocolate. Nice malty, nutty flavor. You can really taste the oats in there. One of the best browns I’ve had. Flossmoor does it again. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 21, 2008 22 oz. bottle. Pours a dark brown with a thin, light tan head. Nutty aroma with hints of roasted oats. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Flavor is quite a suprise. Roasted malt, nuts, chocolate all blend perfectly. Finish is slightly bitter and dry.
