Picked this up at the brewery a couple days after the release. X-Ipa pours pours a slightly hazed deep golden with a bit of an orange hue. A few large carbonation bubbles rise to the dense two finger dirty white head. The head leaves some really great thick spiderwebbed lacing on its way down and has good sticking power. A good looking IPA without a doubt.
My nose is greeted by a heavy handed dose of bitter grapefruit and some other citrus I can’t quite put my finger on. Piney hop oils and a decent amount of resin are in there as well to play the supporting role. I can’t help but smell some blonde tobacco leaves as well, soft and inviting. All of this over the top of mild caramel and biscuity malts. The hops are the showcase here and while they’re not huge and bold they are very well integrated.
The flavor follows the nose very closely. Bitter grapefruit upfront along with the mystery citrus. The soft tobacco comes through mid-palate and fades off as the pine and resinous hops come through. A dash of caramel way in back morphs into the biscuity malts on the swallow. A very good IPA with layers of hop complexity.
The mouthfeel is heavenly smooth and creamy. The carbonation is on the lower side of the spectrum and lets this beer really work its magic. Finishes with a growing bitterness that works it’s way up to moderately bitter over time.
X-IPA is highly drinkable and a hard one to put down after that first tip of the glass. I’ve had the opportunity to drink this on tap a few times and the bottle is right on with the tap version.
Another great brew from the guys at Flossmoor. They never fail to amaze me with the quality of their brews. I’m anxious to pick up the newest release in their IPA series (Pretty Big IPA) and will look forward to the next release of X-IPA.

adrian910ss (1045), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 1, 2008 22 oz bomber courtesy of Todd. Pours a hazy coppery orange with a medium sized beige head. Aroma of fresh grassy tones, grapefruit and caramel. Taste dominated by grassy tones and grapefruit. Excellent. glkaiser (1015), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 13, 2008 Thanks to bwkrieger for the 22. Hazy copper with thin head. Lots of citrus hops but more than enough malt to balance. Some vanilla and caramel sweetness is quite nice, actually. Good example of an imperial ipa that isn’t over the top with alcohol and malt. Nice mix of citrus and spicy hop flavors, and solid bitterness to finish. Ughsmash (3148), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Sep 12, 2008 Bomber. Poured clear medium orange with a short layer of white head and some rising carbonation. The aroma was juicy with grapefruit, floral notes, and light peppery alcohol.. some light oxidadation detracted a little, but it was still quite nice. The flavor had a non-descript pale malt core with juicy grapefruit, cat pee, and floral bitterness surrounding.. warm overall complexion with some sharp boozy impact right at the finish. Syrupy and thicker on the palate with low carbonation.. spicy and complex, especially on the latter half. Tasty brew! lb4lb (1499), Austin, Texas, USA Sep 5, 2008 Bottle from d0b.
WOOOOO!!!

Pours orange to brown with a white head. Where the hell is Erin? I thought she went for a short walk with a person with a broken hip, and how long could that take? Smell is hoppy and candy caramel like. Touch of a yeasty smell that does not belong in an IPA. Taste is yeasty, caramel and hoppy with some fruity and sweet flavors. Moderate bitterness. Decent but ridiculously overpriced. Man, they had a few amazing beers on at the pre-DLD but this is not the same caliber. Average... Beerlando (1439), Orlando, Florida, USA Aug 27, 2008 Black wax bomber. Pours extremely hazy and dark, burnt-orange to sienna brown in color. A frothy, cream colored head leaves sticky ribbons of lacing behind. The aroma is buttery and sweet, showing huge toffee and caramel malts and candy sugar in the malt profile. A hefty dose of orange juice and sharp grapefruit hops completes the nose. Flavors are overly sweet, with buttery toffee and hints of clover honey showing stronger than the orange and grapefruit hops that are meant to counter them. The big, syrupy, cloying mouthfeel is just over-the-top sweet. Overall, this is just too darn malty for my liking. Lacks balance.
