2005 12oz bottle. Pours a very murky deep brown with almost no head leaving a very thin beige ring. Nose starts off with some nice bourbon and vanilla notes, giving way to some candied dark fruits. Flavor is bursting with toffee, caramel, bourbon, vanilla and again some candied dark fruits. Not much carbonation and a good amount of heat on the finish.

From 12-oz bottle pours a hazy and muddy brown colored brew with a thin film top. Aroma of caramel, bourbon, vanilla and a hint of maple syrup. Taste is full bodied, alcohol, with flavors of caramel and whiskey, vanilla, some light milk chocolate and coconut. Finish is thick and bourbon sweet aftertaste.

2005 Bottle shared at the Metro Detroit October ’09 tasting. Opaque mahogany pour with just a thin layer of head. The aroma has lots of charred oak, vanilla, a blend of bourbon and brandy notes, molasses and some oxidation which likely lent the brandy note. The flavor is wonderfully smooth, rich dark fruit with just a touch of bourbon and oak on the finish. Just a touch of oxidation in the flavor which added a nice buttery brandy note. Sticky, medium-full body with soft carbonation.

I bought some bottles at the brewery yesterday and had a sample of the regular Horn Dog which was very good. I also got a shot of Stranahans whiskey which was tasty. The first smell of the bottle is a nice subtle whiskey, and I don’t like whiskey usually. The color is a dark, murky brown with a stingy amount of bubbles, darker than most barleywines I’ve had and possibly a shade darker than regular horn dog. It must pick up some coloration from the whiskey barrel. The whiskey is intense in the aroma but it is good and I enjoy inhaling deeply. The flavor is a nice, sweet malty fruitiness with whiskey notes. Lots of flavors (smokiness?) going on, I will need to sip this slow. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-07-2007 05:15:22

Very tasty and drinkable! Nice complex overall light flavors. It’s like a watered down barleywine. Not heavy at all. Creamy and smooth with ever so slight coconut, vanilla essence from the barrel. Caramely sweet and hoppy. Burnt wood. Very dry finish.

Pours cloudy with nice dark tan, brown color and small tan head. Nose is hoppy with malty caramel and a little wood. Nice body with dark fruits coming through with a dry finish.

Pours brown with a thin tan head. Smells of bourbon, oak, some sweet malt, tarte touches. Tastes of oak, raisins, vanilla, earthy. Dry finish.
