Flying Dog Doggie Style Classic Pale Ale

Bottle. Pours golden orange with a cream coloured head that doesn’t last. Aroma has a fair bit of resiny hops with notes of pine, citrus and fruit salad, however there is a slight soapy smell that isn’t especially offensive but isn’t great either. Flavour is also hoppy with hints of caramel, citrus and malt. Decent APA that is less aggressive than some but far from weak or boring.

Not a great offering from Flying Dog, but nothing they have really is except their imperial porter. I wanted to try them again to be fair, but they are a middle-of-the-road brewery. Beer is flat with no distinction.

12 ox bottle. Pours a golden copper color with a small white head. It tastes of pine and citrus and is a little dry. This is a pretty good beer but not an outstanding one.

Bottle. Pours an amber colour with an off-white head. Very hoppy aroma with hints of grapefruit. Malty fruity hoppy flavor. Has a hoppy bitter finish.

Enough hops to give an otherwise fairly bland beer some character. This is a dog that will not bite if you abuse it. Well suited for a saturday afternoon listening to football.

Bottle. Pours to a clear light brown with a thinning white head. Light aroma of citrus and hops, not that strong. Taste is fairly bland with notes of malts ending with a short hop finish. This is a nice refreshing beer that doesn’t try to do too much. Very poundable without sacrificing too much taste. I recommend trying it on tap if you have the chance.

Mildly hoppy, cleanly sweet, Doggie Style is an ok pale ale but fairly bland. The beer pours a medium rust with a fluffy white head that leaves lots of lacing down the side of the glass. It’s on the dark side for a pale ale, but it’s mostly an appearance issue; no strong specialty malt flavors come through in the flavor. The aroma is balanced with lightly citric hops, a touch of caramel and malty sweetness. Flavor is similar. It’s not bad. There just isn’t enough going on for me. For whatever reason, I consider this beer very middle of the road. The feel is a bit light on carbonation but fine.

Pours from tap a clear golden, lots of carbonation with a white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is very bitter, leafy note with some light lemon citrus notes, mild caramel sweetness and some two-row malt. Flavor is a very smooth bitter hop leafy presence, light citrus and a very smooth sweetness at the end. Moderate density and carbonation but could be a bit heavier in my opinion. Overall a pretty decent APA, hops not overpowering and sweetness matches strength but it seems to miss that "umpf" you look for in an APA.
