Way too much hop character that completely drowns out any malty (OUT!) goodness. ucusty (1915), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA

The nose reminds me a little bit of weizen bock, and even though that’s not a good thing, it’s still a good thing. Along with a clove and yeast aroma, there’s some rhubarb, some dried leaves, some faint squash, and some maple wood in the nose that all work really well togethor. Moderately hoppy, a little high for marzen but it still smells really nice. Frothy and crisp, tends towards sweet, but nowhere near cloying, over the middle, and finishes with a charred corn husk and caramel malt and apple flavor, with a nice balance of sweet and bitter. Has some qualities normally found in altbier, which is something I really like. Overall this is one of the better Oktoberfests sampled so far this fall, and that’s a little bit surprising. Nicely rich and thick for a lager, good mouthfeel, dominant caramel malt profile, barely discernible hops (as the style dictates). Probably will get again as the season comes round. sneagrams3 (1759), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
