Commercial Description:
Dogtoberfest is a unique beer containing five premium malts. This lager draws its influence from the Vienna Marzen or Oktoberfest style. It is rich and malty with a sweet aroma and deep mahogany color.

i’ve got to find some gonzo porter because i see flying dog shit and think, well, they have one good beer so maybe this is decent. this looks decent. a little light for an octoberfest maybe. small head, but nice. bavarian beers should all be wheat opacity. smells quite malty, and i’ve never been more sure about aromatic similarity than this as compared to the 3rd coast old ale. it’s the same with a tiny lean away from alcohol towards malt. haha, well, the taste is laughable. totally empty and flat. some malt coats the mouth, but it is just wholly empty. zero aftertaste, flat palate. well, a bit of bitterness in the finish, but it doesn’t really fit with the beer.

Clearish bronze tone. Medium frothy foam hued of ivory. Keeps a constant collar and the lcaing is lightly placed in cob webbed patterns. Aroma is quite solid of toasted sweet breads. The Vienna malts do their thing well here. Taste is also fairly solid, nice bready tones with a good amount of toasted parts to it. Again, the Vienna malts add up to their normal toasted sweet grain taste. Lightly drying finish with a scad of hops and some malty sweetness returning late underneath. Mediumish body, perhaps not as malty rich as other O-fests in the thickness dept, but it has a nice smoothness and a lightlty toasted texture palying around the edges making for a nice drinking session for an O-fest. I can see drinkin’ quite a few of these without a problem. This beer hounds’ tail is a waggin’ for some more. By far one of the better, more well crafted brews by Flying Dog.

This was a pretty decent seasonal beer from a big company. A little more malty than expected, but in a good way.

Pours a clear mahagony color with minimal head. Thick, malty aroma. Some caramel as well. Light hops and bitterness. Some maltiness as well. Not that great of a balance and not the greatest Octoberfest either.

On tap at the Flying Dog 9/27/06. Medium copper color, very clear with a thin white head. Aroma is very light, but is just some soft malt. Flavor - malt is there, but it takes a backseat to the hops. Too much bitterness for this style. Palate is a little thin, which would probably be ok if the bitterness wasn’t so high. Overall, an ok beer, but way too bitter for the style.

Pours an orangey-amber color with a creamy head that dissipates quickly. The aroma had a distinctive fruity overtone that was noticeable despite the heavy malt influence. This fruit continued through to the flavor which had a surprising bitterness to it. The malts were tasty, but it may have been slightly overhopped for the style. Mouthfeel was silky smooth and almost perfect. Overall, very enjoyable.

Draught at Old Chicago in Coralville, IA. Clear reddish orange fall foliage color. Very attractive. Head was off white, bubbly, and left some lace. Malty caramel aroma with a dash of spice. Nice malty caramel flavor without any bitterness. There was a hint of vanilla. It was actually slightly sweet on the tongue.

Pours a crystal clear red tinged amber with a minor thin white loose head. The nose is sweet and malty with fruity strawberries and just a touch of floral hops. In the mouth this is relatively creamy with good substance for the style, while still being entirely chugable. The flavors are in line with everythign else. Sweet fruity malt with light floral hops. The bitterness is almost toasty and slightly out of place, but the only major flaw in this beer. The unclean bitterness lingers a bit, but not enough to distract me too much from enjoying the beer.
