| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 23, 2009 Bottle. Moderate to heavy malt aromas of roasted and caramel, moderate pine and orange for the hops, light leather for the yeast, and hints of raisin and toffee. Head is large, frothy, off-white with fair lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is light red/brown. Flavor starts heavily sweet just short of cloying and lightly acidic, then the long finish is moderately sweet and lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is medium to full, creamy almost syrupy, has a soft carbonation and finishes lightly astringent, moderately alcoholic and a little dry. This is nice! Perfectly balanced, the best Flying Dog has to offer. Of course it’s hard to find. Allen (1434), Switzerland
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 21, 2009 Bottled 355ml from crackedkettle.com. It pours a deep golden beer with a small beige head. Impressive sweet hoppy aroma of elderflower, clotted cream, pineapple, blood orange, caramel, pine needles, lemon, rose, quite a lot of licorice, wild strawberries and basil. Deeply pleasant taste. Strong bitterness. Full bodied. Oily. Good hop profile. The alcohol is nicely hidden. Lingering sage in the finish which is rather bitter. An excellent American Strong Ale. oteyj (810), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 21, 2009 Cloudy amber pour with one finger beige head. Head retention is somewhat poor. Aroma is grassy and citrus hops with a good proportion of sweet caramel malt. Flavor has an excellent balance of dark fruit and caramel malt character, with a decently profiled citrus hop base. Borderline cloying. Alcohol content quite evident. Palate is viscous and highly carbonated, finishing dry. Decent specimen. Monroe1ato (12), Indiana, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 21, 2009 Bottle. Labeled ’Double Dog Double Pale Ale’. Fuck me, a 10.5% Pale Ale! Sorry, a "Double" Pale Ale. Pours a slightly hazy orange-copper with an average size diminishing fluffy off-white head. Very nice aroma, lots of piney hops followed by sweet malt, bread and a hint of alcohol. Flavour’s also very hoppy, lots of pine and resin, along with plenty of malt, some spices and a long bitter alcoholic finish. Nice medium body. Seems weird to call this a Double Pale as opposed to a Double IPA but whatever, it’s a damn good beer! shawnm213 (1020), South Bend, Indiana, USA

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jun 19, 2009 Once again I’m underwhelmed by this brewery, not sure what people see in them. Aroma hinted at a citric hop but also had a big candy corn-caramel nose, with touches of melanoidin. Bronze color, nice head. Flavor was more strongly hoppy, piney, grassy, with a touch of citrus. Finish was moderately bitter, astringent and hot from all the alcohol. snuh esjaygee (1581), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 18, 2009 Bottle from beastiefan2k - thanks Eugene! Cloudy caramel orange with a foamy tan head that leaves some streaky lace. Aroma of citrus, caramel, bready and toasted malts and alcohol. Taste of citrus hops, grapefruit, alcohol, pine and caramel. Body ends up being a bit cloying and over carbonated but overall it’s a decent brew. Finishes up heavy on the bitter side. stefanje (957), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jun 14, 2009 12 oz bottle that was an extra from ygtbsm. Pours a translucent copper color with a medium white head that has fair retention. The aroma is ripe with grapefruit and a touch of yeast. The flavor is hops forward with a good biter bite backed by caramel, walnuts, grapefruit, malts and orange peel. The palate is full with fizzy carbonation that is somewhat distracting. The finish is long and biter. Overall: A top notch ale, but I’d call it a DIPA as it has many of the taste characteristics of that style, not the catch-all ASA.
