Aroma is really big at first with a lot of citrus, such as lemon (dominant), lime and mandarin orange. As it warms it becomes a bit more floral, but is still very nice. The taste has a little noticeable alcohol, and a lot of hoppy fruitiness. There is also a good deal of bitterness, but it could stand to be a little more so than it is. Good malty backbone that comes out towards the end of it. Mouthfeel is awesome; medium-thick, creamy, and super smooth. Flying Dog has underwhelmed with some of their previous beers that I have tried, but this was a pleasant surprise. Nice aroma with a bit of both hops & malt. As far as drinkability, you are aware of the ABV but the flavor is so well balanced it doesn’t put you off. The flavour is similar with a big biting bitterness. Very hoppy in a perfume-like way rather then the piney I prefer still tasty with medium drinkability. Ceebs25 (241), Naperville, Illinois, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 29, 2009 12 oz bottle. Rather boozy aroma on initial whiff that has some notes similar to a more full-bodied red wine and light scotch, but it does give way after the initial hit to some more appealing notes such as dates, nutty caramel, mixed sweet fruits, and strong citrus hops. Head on the pour was nice, nothing too crazy though, but a good amount of frothy white head, decent retention for the abv in a beer of this kind, much lighter appearing body that you would expect however, some soft particulate and rusty orange in color. Some full bodied flavors from flying dog though (I mean it is 11.5 abv, so I would definitely expect that much). Heavy bitter from the start, of a strong herbal citrus variety, a syrupy grape and other artificial tasting red fruit sweetness backs it up, some medicinal notes in there as well, some leafy bitterness also towards the end, some nutty notes but not as much caramel as i would like, melon fruits in there too, and the finish really kicks the hops into high gear, along with a heavy balance of tart fruit to create a rather interesting and strong yet pretty unappealing and long lasting end to an overdone beer. So ultimately there’s a decent variety in the flavor notes and the balance as advertised isn’t bad, but the quality of the flavors i get, and the overall quality of the beer drinking experience just is not quite there for me with this attempt from flying dog. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 29, 2009 Of all Flying Dog beers this is by far the best. Even though it has a high ABV... it is smoother than most all flying dog beers. Hoppy but not unpleasant, more a citrus tartness. Other flying dog beers are so bad, i gave one to a homeless man. Who spit it out and threw it away. Thats bad beer. TBone (6844), Pori, Finland

Deep hazy amber color, small off-white head. Bready piney aroma with evident alcohol. Full-bodied. Sweetish toffee and bready flavor married with salty hoppyness in the finish. Warming alcohol. A bit like Nogne O #100, but sweeter and not so yeasty. Also some fruity notes. Quite powerful stuff and certainly one of the better ones from Flying Dog. hoppopotamus (187), Santa Cruz, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 28, 2009 Updated: Jun 20, 2009A hazy orange beer with a small off-white head. The aroma is delicious, a nice light juicy fruit and flowery hops with just a bit of alcohol, maybe even a bit sweet. The aroma is obviously hop-dominated as well (maybe citrusy), with a hint of sweet caramel malt. The finish lacks the extreme hop bitterness that really makes a knockout DIPA, but this is a damned fine brew. Mouthfeel a bit syrupy. Baumgartner (108), Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 27, 2009 Bottle poured to glass. Copper brew with rich white head and fine bubbles. Piney aroma of hops, not as strong as label might suggest. This beer is very high ABV but can not taste or smell it. Well balanced in that regards. Over all a very good and stong ale.
