Commercial Description:
Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 7.8% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you don’t show it the proper respect. IBU’s: 85

7 oz. bottle out of mixer. Pours a very dark brown almost black with a creamy medium tan head that lasts awhile. The aroma is roasted malt with caramel and licorice. Good sticky lacing on the glass. Thin mouthfeel with a rich roasted malt with a nice bitter hop finish. Easy to drink hiding the alcohol well. A very good imperial porter from Flying Dog.

Pours a lacing tan head with a dark brown body. Smells of brown sugar and malt. Tastes like brown sugar, toast, chocolate, espresso. Very stout-like. Finish is bittersweet and cloying.

12oz bottle, 2008 vintage (bottle reads 9.2% abv), from grape & gourmet. pours a very dark brown, nearly black, with a thin darker tan head leaving a nice sheet of lace. aroma is big, roasty malts, brandy, dried apricot, red apple, and black licorice. flavor is delicious with dark, roasted malts, some smoky wood, a touch of coffee, apple cider, and a solid balance of hop bitterness on the back end. mouthfeel is slick, medium bodied, with a light, roasty finish. haven’t had too many porters thus far, but this is certainly a solid example.

No surprises I guess that this is head and sholders above the other FD beers I have tried to date. 7.8% is probably on the lighter side for an imperial these days this beer positively benefits as a result. Fresh brandy fruits in the nose along with a harder licorice note. Palate is fruity early before more licorice and a fair whack of hop bitterness, the latter not really expected. Maybe the hops keeps the palate weight feeling lighter than what it really is? Good stuff this.

Pours black with a very big and medium-tan head. Rich, roasty, and malty sweet, with a little hop flavor that blends with coffee-like roastiness in the background. Nice and thick, finishes fairly clean. Pretty tasty stuff.

Bottle. Pours a very small head, goes fast, dark black in the glass. Aroma of malts, some coffee, but very dominated by some sweet fruits, smells like pine apple. The taste is very sweet, guess it’s the pine apple and various fruits, some coffee and maybe licorice. Smooth finish. Quite a good porter, but I had higher expectations... maybe it’s because I had a Nøgne Ø Imperial Stout before this one.

Pours dark black with a 1 finger tan head with with good retention some lacing. Really delicious beer that is drinkable but at the same time has a dark malty taste yet finished clean.
