Commercial Description:
Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 7.8% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you don’t show it the proper respect. IBU’s: 85

bottle. Pours a deep black with dark red-brown streaks and a small fast disappearing head. Intimidating. Aroma is intense of hops, fruit, and some dark malt and some brown sugar. Hoppier than I would have expected. Flavor is malty but with a bunch of hops, producing a fairly crisp yet flavorful mixture that also contained a bit of coffee, roasts and alcohol. Some nuttiness as well. Flavor is very smooth. I must say that as this beer warms up, a MUCH more balanced and full-bodied flavor comes out. It is rich, with chocolate, coffee, and some soft sweetness. Overall, very good.

Firkin @ DuClaw Real Ale Festival. Special firkin with Cascade dry hopping and bitter orange peel. Big head, but it was tapped soon after arrival. Settled a nice opaque brown/black. Deep roast aroma with some hop citrus peaking through. Nice rich body with hop bite to match. Slight citrus flavors too. Very well done. This should be the normal Gonzo.

This was like the love child of an IPA and a stout. Lots of nice chocolate and coffee tones on this beer, but then this unexpected but not unpleasant hop kick. Was surprised at the hops but ultimately I’m not sure if they helped or hindered. Might have to revisit.

Draft. Dark brown pour with a frothy off-white head. Coffee on the nose, malty and a bit fruity in taste. Delicious beer.

Pours a thick deep dark brown. The nose is a strong coffee with subtle chocolate notes. Comes across the palate very similar; but it has a very faint chocolate undertones.

Bottle BBE 20.08.09. Pours black with medium, dark brown head. Medicinal phenolic aroma. Some tropical fruits, like pineappe and mango as well as strawberries. Light lemon and grapefruit, with yeasty toasted, roasted malt. Egg nogg with lemon peel. Medium to light body. Slightly phenolic. Soft bitterness and some sweetness. Just a hint of sourness and soft roastiness.
