This pours a cloudy, reddish, deep mahogany with almost no head and definitely no lacing. Looks more like a glass of port wine. Aroma is spicy, dark fruits, toffee.
Taste is very nicely mellowed out from aging two years: massive rum raisin, prunes, dates, nutmeg. Alcohol is very well hidden. Rich, mellow, and excellent. neepsntatties (320), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 11, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Colour... amber with no head. Nose... toffee, liquer cake and light brown sugar. Palate... minimal CO2, gently sweet, slightly boozy, dates, dried fruits, Christmas cake, but all flavours are quite subtle to moderate. A decent barley wine, but needs more complexity in the flavour profile. Jblauvs (542), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 8, 2009 Dark Orange pour with a slight fizzy head. Aroma is sweet and boozy, simple. Flavor is much more of this, very sweet malt candi and some toffee notes. Some light hoppiness. Booze is very present as well. Overly simple. Meh Rustyham (556), miami, Florida, USA
| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Nov 6, 2009 probably the worst barley wine i have had in a long time. I imagine that idf Sam Adams had made one, theirs would be better than this fizzy, flavorless drain pour. Maybe I’m just angry that I paid for a beer that is obviously past it’s due date and has chunks of broken proteins going for a refreshing dip in my beer. The truth is this is a slightly below par Barley Wine... but for 10.2 it accomplishes something truly impressive. Tastes are on the lighter side but composed of several elements.. licorice, sweet malts, cherry, earthy ester for sure, and some bright hops poking out. Alcohol was noticeable, and while warming, perhaps made this a bit unbalanced. I needed this to be bigger... TWSS. 3.35 jonno (562), Brisbane, Australia
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 31, 2009 Thanks to Nate for cracking this. Big toffee and apple nose. Sticky and quite sweet this is a perfect dessert beer. Quite smooth but perhaps may be cloying in large doses (as most BWs are in my opinion). Pretty good actually and a good finish to a good day of beer tasting. CUJO (339), Brooklyn, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 31, 2009 bottle: pint glass: VPH: I love Barley Wines! Apparently this one is not so good, can’t wait to try some of the more higher ranking brews. the flavors I was able to find: malt, chocolate, licorice. The beer was actually creamy, medium in body... tons of esters throughout.
