Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

12oz bottle from 2007, tasting pretty fine right now. Pale copper pour with a nice head and carbonation. The aroma is sharply hoppy, even with some age, with a malt mildness that makes this a pretty inviting BW. Taste is still pretty hot initially, which is a mild disappointment, but the creamy body and the caramel flavors tend to balance it out. Pretty good.

12 oz bottle @ Evanston Movie theater lounge. 12 oz. bottle. This had a sweet aroma. dark brown pour with an off-white head and creamy lace. lots of licorice for a BW. not what I’ve come to expect for the style, but still pretty good evening sipper.

when it comes to the strongly malt based beers, i always prefer crunchy toffee malt character to sticky sweet sludge. so often i encounter the latter, but not tonite. this beer is wildly dark for its style, and contains none of the overt sweetness that often leads me away from a brew. just like double dog, flying dog has again created a beer that is so wildly drinkable considering its ABV it should be illegal -- its certainly dangerous.

A below average barleywine. Dark orange pour, thin head. Caramel, sweet malt, hints of chocolate, fruit, and slightly hoppy. Pretty boring.

7oz bottle from Canis Major box on April 28, 2009. Surprised I haven’t rated this yet. Light mahogany color with a thin head. Yep... gimmie that 10%! Light hop aroma, mostly malty flavor. Very sweet, not very hoppy. I’m almost sad. A little thin on the palate. Light mouthfeel, clean, non-lingering finish. Too easy to drink this.

355ml bottle. BB 15.04.10 Served with only a light chill. Pours fantastically with a big thick light caramel head atop a copper-highlighted mahogany body. Aroma is liquorice and leather straightup, banana and raisin come through with a spicy vanilla oak character. Hint of bitter chocolate, grass, toffee and citrus hang in the background. Creamy body, seems somewhat subdued for such a strong beer, very smooth for the most part, sticky texture. Bitterness manifest itself towards the finish. Rich chocolate and burnt toffee malt upfront, bit of creamy cereal leads onto more complicated flavours of green banana, unripe peach and melon, leafy/grassiness is quite prominant. Woody spice lingers on the finish, reasonably smooth, bitterness is big but not too sharp. Would have to say this is probably one of the rougher barley wines i’ve come across. Certainly has the potential to age well, but a bit harsh at this point.
