oteyj (713), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Apr 19, 2009 Orange caramel pour with no head. Aroma is caramel and some grapefruit hops. Flavor is somewhat alcoholic with a definite hoppy presence and moderate caramel sweetness. Palate is quite thin. Not overly impressed. jesperhammer (260), Copenhagen, Denmark Apr 18, 2009 Brown with a slight orange hue.
Almost no head - I guess alcohol kills it?
Not a lot of aroma on this one.
Very malty with lots of charamel and bread. Hops are there, but not strong.
I remember this as normally being better, but maybe I am just getting used to better beer than this?
It is a fine standard barley wine, but not overwhelming. 17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 15, 2009 Fresh 09 bottle. Pours a dark clear reddish amber with a large frothy beige sudsy head. Aroma of cotton candy, piney hops, sour wet grains, and some noticeable alcohol. Flavor is much richer than the aroma indicates, quite sweet at first, full flavored, caramel, lightly woody, some cotton candy, huge sugary barley finish with a quick crisp hop bite and bit of oakiness. Long bitter barley aftertaste 7.5. Very full mouthful, dense but with lively carbonation, smoothly syrupy. A very simple barley wine full of flavor and so easy to drink. Barrios (852), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Apr 13, 2009 Pours a dark amber body with a light tan head that laces. Smells of alcohol, malt, and dark, ripe fruit. Taste is brown sugar, plum, notes of licorice and chocolate. Finish is sweet with a hint of bitterness. jumpjet2k (136), Austin, Texas, USA Apr 12, 2009 Bottle. An interesting brown/amber color, but absolutely no head to speak of. Aroma very sweet with a bit of fruitiness. Flavor has tons of malt, smooth and caramelly once it warms up. Overall, though, a pretty average barleywine, not something I’d seek out. Under-age Drinker (96), Colorado, USA Apr 6, 2009 Amber, burnt wood brown. Banana on the nose, some other fruit, and alcohol. flavor is just off, nothing like a good barley wine should be. Weak jkaiser (219), Orlando, Florida, USA Apr 5, 2009 Aroma was nice as expected of a barley wine. Appearance was a mahogany halo of sorts. Flavor had smooth and powerful malts. Bitterings were at a minimum. Palate was smooth and simple. Nice. Label rocks! ewestern (198), Ohio, USA Apr 2, 2009 Cider-like appearance, dark cloudy amber color. Thin off-white head, leaves some lacing. Weak sweet aroma of hops, fruit, cherry. Caramel flavor undertones malts and hops, notes of honey. Chocolate taste and carbonation make it almost cola-ish. Smooth in the mouth with a tangy acoholic bitter finish. Warms up nicely. It has some negatives but is overall enjoyable.
