trayns (237), Beverly Hills, Michigan, USA Feb 19, 2009 Bottle. Pours a. deep dark amber, almost a brown color. Aroma is toffee and sweet malty. Taste is a little boozy, a good barley wine though. BroSpud (583), , Massachusetts, USA Feb 16, 2009 7oz bottle. $13.99 Mix Pack sampler from Julio’s Liquors. This was an OK beer but definitely not one of the better barley wines I have had. Somethng seemed lacking, not quite sure what. The supposed licorice taste was not very pronounced. Not bad but wil go with something else next time I’m hankering for a barley wine. Gr0ve (1382), Oslo, Norway Feb 15, 2009 355 ml bottle. Dark brown and a little hazy. Small white fine-laced
head. Bold caramelly aroma with burnt caramel and dark
chocolate. Alcohol is definitely there. [truncated] Stew41 (1042), Caulfield, Australia Feb 15, 2009 Updated: Sep 22, 2009Fairly standard issue here. Ruby red in colour with tinges of brown. No head (as expected). Nose shows rich malts and fruitcake, as well as some cooked fruits and alcohol. Palate weight is a littleon the light side for a 10%+ beer. More rich sweet malt and fruitcake and maybe some harder licorice and bitterness to finish. A bit clunky through the palate. Can’t see this getting much better. (Nov 2008 bottling) Bullit (1300), Glasgow, Scotland Feb 13, 2009 Dark brown colour, off-white head. Aroma had caramel, molasses and spices. Flavour of toasted malts, dark fruits, and licorice. Sweet finish, alcohol well noticable. scottw86 (180), Maryland, USA Feb 11, 2009 Poured a dark brown/red with a smaller off-white head. Aroma is strong and of molasses, fruit, hops, and wheat. Taste is slightly bitter. Licorice, and fruit up front. Finish is bitter and mainly of alcohol. Some vanilla creamy taste as well. Aftertaste is mostly alcohol. Some pretty interesting flavors, but the alcohol taste holds it back. BrotherGrendel (545), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Feb 9, 2009 A- Pours a clear brown hue with creamy, brown head that is mostly diminishing, fair lacing on the glass
S- Nose is dominated by dark fruit (raisins, plums), and tones of maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, strong alcohol presence
T- Initial taste is of cherries and molasses, followed by chocolate/oatmeal/caramel malts, finish has tones of walnuts, vanilla, raspberries in the brief, light finish
M- Full-bodied and watery, slightly under carbonated
D- Limited drinkability like most Barleywines, the abv is significant and does not lend to extended drinking, but this is definitely a flavorful and complex barleywine that would be a great after-dinner quaff Cavie (1317), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Feb 8, 2009 Very high alcohol taste. Very high. Hard to get past that. Even for a barleywine, I found it a hindrance.
