Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Flying Dog continues to do well with their heavy line. Nicely balanced barley wine here. Enough of the molasses and dark fruits (prunes) to add to your pleasure. Very thick on the tongue with maybe a wee bit too much sweetness. Let’s see how it tastes next year.

Dark red pour with a thin head. Sour, Flemish notes in the nose, with the standard barleywine brown sugar aroma. Decent flavor of sugar and alcohol, with dark fruit, some roasted malt flavor, and coffee. Nicely complex for a barleywine that gets no respect. I like it.

pours a dirty orange, very small white fizzy head aroma is yeast, bread, citrussy hops, caramel, and slightly cloying sweet alcohol flavor is more mild than expected, in a good way: the alcohol is fairly apparent, and kind of rummy, but there are bits of toffee and orange peel, some nice bitterness to balance good medium body keeps the thing from being too chewy long finish, but its mostly bite from the alcohol

12 oz bottle. Poors a dark, brown/amber color with a one finger light tan head. Aroma is sweet with molasses and dried fruit notes and a hint of chocolate. Strong malt flavor with some hops and a sweet finish (too sweet in fact). Flavors are kind of muddled and overpowered by the sweetness and the alcohol content of the beer. Decent, but it would be difficult to drink more than one at a sitting.

12oz. bottle, purchased a year or so ago. Pours a dark burgundy with a nice three finger fluffy tan head, great retention and lacing. Aroma is ripe dark fruits, dried apple, honey, and a touch of molasses. Flavor is more sweetly malty, with candied and dried dark fruits, and molasses. Not overly complex, definitely heavily malty, moderately sweet. I wouldn’t purchase again as there are much better readily available out there, but overall a decent enough barleywine.

The aroma is sweet, almost like molasses or licorice with alcohol. It pours thick and brown. The flavor is too sweet and malty but there is not enough balance to distract from the alcohol.

12oz bottle. Pours murky brown with no head. Aroma is of caramel, malt, spice, hops, and alcohol. Taste is spicy, with caramel, malt, dried fruit, and hops. Overly sugary, with the alcohol overpowering the other flavors. Weak all around.
