Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Bottle.Hazy mahogony color with a thin mostly diminishing frothy off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel roasted malt, rasins grapefruit licorice and pine nuts.Flavor is big on the malt, sweet and sugary I only get a slight hint of the chocolate, some wine, dark cherries.Dry slightly bitter finish, pleasing mouthfeel..Very drinkable and better than expected.

Tremendous, majestic purple body with a head that forms a brownish, thick ring which settles nicely into an intimidating, murky pool... grape and malt dominate with chocolate and sweeter hints following (licorice, the label suggests)... yeasts are subtle and complex... WARM...curls around the tongue with minimal effervescence... a flourish at the throat... full-bodied with a lingering aftertaste.... strong, malty--grapish tastes, almost of merlot--instantly warms with a pungent punch and slyly leaks some chococlate flirtations at its finish... the Flying Dog select mixpack has been solid, and Horn Dof befits its style with accuracy, smoothing out by mid-glass and numbing pleasantly...

Bottle. Deep orange brown color. Black sediment lingers with carbonation bubbles and sticks to the side of the glass. Flavor is big malts, black licorice, and a bit of chocolate liquor. Finish is anise and a bit of warming alcohol. Light bodied. Pretty decent.

2001 bottle shared by robert the bruce at stateline. Sampled next to a 2008 bottle, wow, huge differences. Both had a sweet aroma. Taste was sweet malt and sugar all blended together. Maltier then I expected. The 2001 bottle was past its prime but held up quite well. Smoother then the new bottle. Thanks bruce for sharing

12 oz bottle from the new Flying Dog mix 4pack purchased at Spirits on Rt 9 Toms River. I have copious notes on this one but it all boils down to one thing....ALCOHOL BOMB. This beer was a total let down unless your looking to get real banged up real quick pass this one up and pass it up quick.

Bottle vintage 07BB. Pours hazy and slightly orange, but mostly brown. I know this presents itself as more malt than hop, but I detect a pretty decent citrusy hop punch on top of caramel malts, wood and dark cherries. possesses the expected viscous body.

Bottle: Pours an amber brownish color with a thin tan head. Smells like a hoppy, doughy sweetness but surprises you with a unigue well blended brew. It will really warm you up quickly.
