krysztofar (344), belleville, Illinois, USA Nov 30, 2008 12 oz bottle. color is tawny brown. intensely sweet nose of brown sugar and caramel with a hint of apricot. very thick mouth is quite sweet. notes of raisins and fruitcake and some spice. a hint of clove helps bring the back end to a lighly hopped finish. keepersj12 (774), Sicklerville, New Jersey, USA Nov 30, 2008 Reddish brown with a nice head after a hard pour. Aroma is very wine like. Flavor is sweet with a bit of bitterness in the background. Nice and smooth despite the alcohol content. gpekar (221), Maryland, USA Nov 30, 2008 Poured a cloudy, dark, orangish brown with a 1/2" creamy tan head. There was a sweet aroma of raisins and a hint of chocolate. There was a sweet taste initially with floavors of coffee and chocolate. A warmth developed along with a mild alcohol taste on the finish. afireinside96 (817), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 28, 2008 2007 vintage, served in a Duvel tulip. Dark garnet body topped by a thin off-white head. Smells of toffee, tea, caramel, alcohol, and a touch of chocolate. Flavors of tea, grass, and toffee, there is some rancid quality to it as well. Barely noticeable but not pleasant. Somewhat dry finish for a barley wine. Has some alcohol burn but not too much. It is alright but nothing I am going to be jonesing to have again. bluevegie (2169), Perth, Australia Nov 27, 2008 Not exactly clear, browny red body with thin head. Some dried fruits in the smell as well as the alcohol, and the taste is a lot like it smells. Didn’t exactly go for this beer, couldn’t really fault it though didn’t really turn me on as I was hoping.
Richy (17), Dublin, Ireland Nov 21, 2008 Very hoppy aroma. Intial flavour is overpowered by the taste of the alcohol. Tastes like an APA mixed with cheap vodka Not one, I’d recommend. halfluck (13), East Victoria Park, Australia Nov 21, 2008 355ml bottle. pours with a decent head for a barley wine then dies down to a millimeter lacing is not to shabby either. smells like malty caramelly goodness, taste is pretty full bodied but quite smooth and the alcohol is well hidden. bitterness kind of hides in the background? jhumphries69 (717), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Nov 18, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a thick, cloudy, deep ruddy brown w/ subtle orange/red/brown highlights and a thin, light tan head. The aroma is big and malty - lots of toffee and caramel with some sweet chocolate, vinous bitter fruit, and subtle smoke. There is some citrus - like orange candy - and alcohol in there, too. The flavor starts malty with a subtle woodiness, lots of sweetness, and some bitter fruit qualities. There is a lot of caramel. This beer is very malty with hints of smoke, a firm hoppy bitterness and subtle notes of spice. The finish has a big bitterness, some bitter flavor from ethanol, and chocolate-covered caramel - mixed with some spice, dark fruit, alcohol, and smoke. The mouthfeel is full in body with somewhat low carbonation. The carbonation is low enough to keep the texture viscous and full with no spritziness but not low enough to feel flat or syrupy. The bubbles are noticeable, just not particularly lively. Overall -much better than I remember (I first had Horn Dog in 2001 or 2002 and at that time it was cloying and hard to drink). This was a drinkable barley wine - not too much caramel or cloying sweetness, not too much hot alcohol flavor.
