Ofortuna (322), Grafton, Wisconsin, USA May 30, 2008 12 oz bottle. Wow, this one is young. Aroma, flavour, et al indicated this need a good year on it for everything to mellow out. Aggressive fusels really dominate throughout the experience. Behind all the green character, this did exhibit some nice caramelization and speciality malt character. I love the "fruitcake soaked in bourbon" reference below. Outstanding comparison and spot on observation. A nice round mouthfeel to it with a bit of creamy character on the end. There’s some bitterness in here to balance out the grain bill, but nothing really on the aroma. Odd. Towards the middle, and increasing towards the end, of the glass this just becomes more difficult to drink. I need to re-rate this, ideally, with about a year and a half on it. pinkzambia (986), Boise, Idaho, USA May 30, 2008 Bottle Brown with mahogany tints. Aromas of old, old cedar, leather and my grandmother’s old couch (or, davenport, as she used to say). Yummalicious sweet flavors of vanilla, figs and sweet peat. This is a great example of a mellowedout sweet barley wine. Quite delicious. BuckeyeBoy (1645), Boise, Idaho, USA May 29, 2008 Bottle Pours out a brownish red topped with a small white head. Sweet aroma of brown sugar. Tast more of the sweetness and some pti fruit. a pretty nice body. Thanks pink MadMan (497), Tempe, Arizona, USA May 29, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours a dark ruby brown with faint and quickly dissipating tan head. Aromas are malty and sweet. Flavor is still sweet but not overly so with big malt, and fruit in the way of fig and plum and maybe just your regular sweet fruitcake soaked in bourbon type thing with some piny hoppiness thrown in the mix. It’s warm, but not overly so. Fairly easy drinker with nothing notable, which is good but can also be bad because it’s got nothing stand out to make me buy more. Headbanger (1574), Aurora, Illinois, USA May 29, 2008 12oz bottle-A dark ruby red/brown body with a nice tight tan head. Roasted malt, sweetness, and sugars on the nose. Flavors begin with sweetness, malt, and plums on this full bodied beer. It finishes with chocolate and a little alcohol. Very well balanced Barley Wine. Not my style but very impressed. daknole (2805), Plantation, Florida, USA May 29, 2008 this is a nice barleywine. very malty on the nose after a nice dark pour. flavor is sweet syrup, malt, dried dark fruit, and light hops to balance it well. warm and delicious. ThaBobfather (178), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA May 28, 2008 Strong malty aroma. Deep brown/red appearance. Malty flavor is citrus undertones. Very smooth with poor bitter finish. High quality. jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 27, 2008 Bottle at Jerry’s. Dark brown with decent, fleeting tan head / Sweet, syrupy, malty nose of dried fruit and leather / Full body, malty & syrupy, with mellow carbonation and a touch of hops on the good finish / Flavors of raisins, caramel, nuts, leather, coffee, apricots, and oak / Very nice.
