TheEpeeist (1427), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA May 15, 2008 12 oz bottle, a year old. Clear dark cola with a trace of head. Nose is toffee and boozy raisin, hints of chocolate and hops. Medium body with a spritz of carb. Taste is caramel, Concord grape and butterscotch. Bitter grassy finish. Tasty enough. WesKBob (317), Bethany, Oklahoma, USA May 15, 2008 Pours a dark amber brown with a thin off-white head. Sweet aroma with caramel malt, raisins and light hops. Flavor is sweet up front, with flavors of raisins and figs. But then some coffee malt gets you in the back of the throat in the aftertaste. Alcohol is readily present and warming. Thick and full-bodied. If you’re a big malt fan, this is one for you. xnoxhatex (1305), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA May 14, 2008 12 oz bottle from canis major mixed 4-pack from West Lakeview Liquors, Chicago. Hazy deep brown with small, fizzy beige head. Aroma is perfumy and fruity with sweet banana. Big alc, perfumy, sweet banana with a little dough and other fruit with some subtle hops as well. Medium and syrupy body with some carbonation. This is very reminiscent of FFF Alpha Kong to me, but surprisingly more drinkable despite the fact that it’s a little gross. Enjoyit (1695), Vadum, Denmark May 14, 2008 Deep brown of color with a beige head. An aroma of dark fruits, prunes, chocolate, hops and sweets. A flavor of malt, liqurice, hops, chocolate, sweets and fruits. sebletitje (1880), Tampa, Florida, USA May 11, 2008 One great beer, at 10.2 abv.
Dark amber pour, very flat head. Strong barley, caramel - intense malty aroma.
Goes down very well, the abv is well hidden.
A good addition to the barleywine family. A good beer to sip on and enjoy. changeup45 (782), Orlando, Florida, USA May 10, 2008 Deep brown/amber color, some haze and a moderate head that settles to a pretty nice foamy ring on top. Aroma is sugary with alcohol, sweet malts and some oak. The flavor is sweet raisins and plums with maple sugar and honey with some alcohol noticeable. Finishes with some spice and hops. Not complex but good. For whatever reason, while not as complex, this reminds me a little of Dogfish Immort. Pretty easy drinking for a barleywine even as it warms. Not spectacular but I liked it. ChrisJ (100), Warrenton, Virginia, USA May 10, 2008 Bottle @ home. Pours in dark brown with some red around the edges. Thick head. Strong aroma of caramel, slightly sweet, some alcohol too. The flavor is caramel some hop bitterness, well balanced and moderate. The mouthfeel is medium full with some pronounced warming from the ABV. Good balance creates a nice beer, not as exciting as some but still quality. tiffanya (45), Federal Way, Washington, USA May 6, 2008 Started with cold 12-oz bottle out of the fridge (~44°F). Poured into Lucifer brandy snifter glass.
Appearance: Chestnut brown with off-white head. Persistent ring of froth around glass walls.
Aroma: Initial aroma of dark fruit with hint of alcohol. Alcohol came out on the nose as it warmed toward room temp. At 63°F nose became largely alcoholic.
Mouth-feel: Smooth, medium bodied.
Flavor: Slightly bitter when cold. Malty caramel sweet come out more as the beer warms. A very enjoyable sipper; alcohol appears when taking a few gulps in a row but remains fairly well hidden when sipping. Sweet malts are balanced with lightly bittering hops. Hint of dark fruit.
An easy-drinking barleywine.
