tiffanya (45), Federal Way, Washington, USA May 6, 2008 Started with cold 12-oz bottle out of the fridge (~44°F). Poured into Lucifer brandy snifter glass.
Appearance: Chestnut brown with off-white head. Persistent ring of froth around glass walls.
Aroma: Initial aroma of dark fruit with hint of alcohol. Alcohol came out on the nose as it warmed toward room temp. At 63°F nose became largely alcoholic.
Mouth-feel: Smooth, medium bodied.
Flavor: Slightly bitter when cold. Malty caramel sweet come out more as the beer warms. A very enjoyable sipper; alcohol appears when taking a few gulps in a row but remains fairly well hidden when sipping. Sweet malts are balanced with lightly bittering hops. Hint of dark fruit.
An easy-drinking barleywine. skortila (2879), Bunnik, Netherlands May 5, 2008 Bottled. Aroma has sugar, caramel malts, some hoppiness, some dry fruits. Clear, dark amber coloured with a thin head. Taste is sweet, relative bitter, has sugar fruitiness, hops. Good, typical barley wine. caesar (3020), Bunnik/Utrecht, Netherlands May 3, 2008 Bottled. Clear amber color, short head. Aroma of caramel malt, typical american hops, hint of sugar cane. Sweet malty taste, quite bitter. Nothing special for an american barley wine, but not bad either. HonkeyBra (1273), Lemont, Illinois, USA May 2, 2008 Pours a deep mahogany with barely any head. There is a sweet appley aroma, almost cidery, that seems a bit thin. Very hoppy taste, with a lot of sweetness. A full and syrupy mouthfeel. Overall, one of the best barley wines I’ve ever had. deepsouth (23), biloxi, Mississippi, USA May 2, 2008 i drank this one from a rochefort glass.
this beer poured a deep dark red raisinish color and if there was one bubble, there were a million. i poured these as i usually do, pretty hard and get the same usual no head with a tan ring around the edge of the glass and a few patches of tan swimming around the top of the glass. as for trying to see through this one, forget it. not on flying dogs time.
the smell is quite good. very fruity and again raisiny. usually the booze scent is faint at first and develops over time on me with this one, but this one just got the once over in the cooler, so i can actually smell the booze from jump street. a pleasant one on the sniffer.
the taste is fruits, figs, dates, raisins, booze. i love the taste of this beer. i’d go out on a limb and say this beer would taste best near room temperature. very warming on the way down.
the mouthfeel is pretty medium. where’d the bubbles go? i don’t taste much carbonation, at least not near what i’d expect with the bubbles bubbles bubbles.
a very drinkable beer. so drinkable, i find time to treat myself to about one of these per week and keep a pretty healthy stash around the house. my favorite offering from flying dog so far. they got this one right for me. i actually haven’t drank more than one of these at one sitting and i can’t imagine that more than two could be anything but detrimental to your ability to walk or function for that matter.
highly recommended in my opinion.
i also plan on laying three or four of these down for future reference. i think it’s a keeper.
Unique69crazy (119), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Apr 30, 2008 Impressive!! This is BY FAR the best beer that I have tried out of Flying Dog. Has a very sweet taste with a light amount of carbonation. Swirls of candy-like aroma fill the air as one consumes this. Great to have while one is relaxing and winding down from a hard day. This is on my next shopping list. MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Apr 30, 2008 A Mes rate: bottle at Chris O’s Ha Ha Ha Ha Gimme the Cheese Tasting. Rich amber with a thin rim for a head. I really can’t put my finger on it but there is something in the aroma that is pulling tremendously at the very depths of my memory. Possibly Kola Kube sweets. Odd rhubarb notes too. Cant’s really pin it down but I like it. Flavour is full on sweet barley wine. Loads of caramel with some bitter hoppage and some nice wooden notes. Jolly nice but the alcohol is much too harsh. Shame as everything else is pretty much on the button. possumjc (99), Charleston - Mt Pleasant, South Carolina, USA Apr 28, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a hint of red. Tan head. Sweet malty aroma. A fair amount of hops mixed in with the sweet malty flavor. Very syrupy on the palate. Pretty good barleywine.
