Leighton (234), New York, New York, USA Sep 15, 2009 A big, big beer. Poured a rich amber color with a medium off-white head. Nice malt aroma gives way to a sweet, balanced blend of malt and hops. Quite smooth, low carbonation. Really tasty. bretupdegraff (172), Fishers, Indiana, USA Sep 13, 2009 not a bad brew but there are much better Barley Wines. This one is light on the ABV compared to most Barleys but that could be a plus for me.. taste was lacking complexity. Just OK. dimenhetfield (157), , Florida, USA Sep 7, 2009 A really big beer for 10.2 ABV. Very dark with a big aroma of malts and barley. Make sure that it’s very cold when served, if it sits around and warms up then the flavor can be lost. njmoons (52), New Jersey, USA Sep 4, 2009 Poured aggressivly into a glass. Resulted in a nice head for a big beer which held up well.
The color are exceptional, or interesting depending on how you look at it. Dark cloudy, with almost a purple hue, offset by the light color of the foam.
The smell is what you would expect from a big beer, strong malty heavy fruits (plum, cherry).
I was a little lost on the taste, at almost room temp. There was not as much complexity in the flavor as I would like, and the flavor was dominated by a very sweet malt and not much else. I could feel the alcohol in the middle, and light hoppiness on the back end.
Nice robust mouthfeel, as expected from a big beer.
Not bad, but there are better choices.
Soonah (900), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA Aug 30, 2009 Poured a color that was somewhere between copper and brown. A slight haze to it. A thin, off-white head that blinked away into a small foam ring. The aroma heavy on the malt and dark fruits with some lighter citrus as well. The flavor was very malty and sweet. Some citrus and spice came out as it warmed. The mouthfeel was more carbonated than most barleywines, which made for a nice distraction. Nothing special here really. welho (30), Finland Aug 27, 2009 330ml Bottle. Pours dark amber with very small head that was gone in seconds. Tastes is like malts, alcohol, fruits. Nice beer for coming cold nights. gunnfryd (3539), Kristiansand, Norway Aug 27, 2009 Bottle. Dark amber colour with a beige head. Aroma is alcohol, licorice, coffee, malt. Flavour is licorice, alcohol, coffee, dried fruits, malt, hop. Full bodied nice beer. zdk (188), New York, USA Aug 26, 2009 bottle: reddish brown.small head, but no staying power. Arouma is dark malty strong alcohol. Taste is pruny and a bit salty, buttery, sweet and hugely alcoholic. Light hops it almost tastes like bourbon. Nice... first time trying the style so I don’t know where it compares.
