Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Bottle at home. Dark red brown with a light brown head, some lacings. Aroma heavy malty (caramel, toffee, sweet dark fruits), likght hoppy. Flavor heavy sweet, light bitter. Medium/full body. Very pleasant.

Bottle from Utobeer. Hazy ruby colour. Not sure that many hops really work with the malts which are syrupy nor the alcohol. Bit soapy on aroma. Hot alcohol and then some syrup and some very thing bitterness. Not a great barley wine. After JW Lees Harvest ale 2003, this is a bit uncultured and a bruiser. Hops are too metallic. fruit comes from the syrupy malts. Poor for its style. Would I have it again? No.

Sampled at Flying Dog and in bottle: Pours a dark red colour with very little head. has a sweet aroma, reminds me of carmel apples. Strong and high in abv, with a noticeable alcohol taste. Raisins, strawberries and cinnamon. a tight hop finish rounds off this strong but balanced brew.

Pours deep mahogany with a halo of tan foamy bubbles. Nose is sweet with caramel, molasses, rasins. The flavor is a bit pungent and sour in the back of the mouth. There is also a subtle sweetness in the mid. An earthy influence and burning sensation on the way down.

Bottle...very dark brown body with a beige head...sweet thick palate, a creaminess that follows...not much complexity, a bread essence, laced with alcohol and grain flavors with sweet...alcohol is pretty well hidden, yet apparent...bitter sweet candy with an alcohol center....orange citrusy finish, but not like an IPA...malted and amped on the sweet malt....small amounts of lacing and aroma is simply sweet malt and sugars...but I liked it....:)

Deep mahogany with thin tan head. Strong aroma of alcohol and sweet malt. Dark fruit like cherry and plum come through most on the flavor. Slight alcohol finish. Nice barley wine.

BLAH! Terrible barley wine. While I am not big on the style to begin with, this is terrible. Very metallic and stale aroma of dark malt. Pour was a murky dark brown with a one finger off white head. Taste was strong dark malt with hints of licorice and metal. Imagine putting a good barley wine in a glass, dropping 10 pennies in it and letting it sit for a few days. That’s what this is.

Wow, thisone could be my new barley for speeches. Not better than anchor old foghorn, but for the people it’s great. Sweetness is comfortable and the alcohol is nice bitter and soft. Heavy nose of berries and dried fruits. Warming and long lasting.
