WallyWalrus (205), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Apr 14, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a syrupy, cloudy, and muddy orange with almost no head. Aroma is sweet, with a strong note of anise alongside hints of syrupy hops, vanilla, tobacco, and spices. Taste is medium-full, with a sweet almost candy-like hops flavor opening up into a more traditional finish of roasted malt, spices, and caramel. An amazingly drinkable barleywine, but lacking in the style’s usual depth. Elizavyeta (110), Minnesota, USA Apr 14, 2008 Deep amber in color with a wispy white head that dissipates quickly. The aroma has strong mineral notes punctuated by that of pineapple, butterscotch, and coconut.
The actual flavor is remarkably intense with sweet, toasty notes giving way to a long, slightly bitter finish smacking of bittersweet chocolate, tart apple, and toasted malt.
Have for dessert along a slice of peach pie and vanilla bean ice cream. EHopper (274), Minnesota, USA Apr 13, 2008 Nice, dark carmel color with beige head. Aroma is sweet malt with a little alcohol, reminds me of a gel that we used to be able to buy as kids 35 years ago and blow hard sided balloons out of with a hint of fake pineapple candy. Good fruit and brown sugar flavor that does seem to be a carbonated wine at times. Worth another taste sometime. jcweaver (65), VA Beach, Virginia, USA Apr 11, 2008 A different taste from most barleywines, no alcohol burn in the after taste. I like this one it was a good overall barleywine, very complex but different. Swalden28 (1439), McKinney, Texas, USA Apr 10, 2008 Bottle. Pours a very nice clear dark amber with biege head. Aroma of Floral, malt, with alcohol aroma. Tast is very sweet, malty, hints of roasted grains, nice hop flavor and alcohol spice. Full body with medium carbonation. Good beer! FatTony (121), Augusta, Georgia, USA Apr 9, 2008 12 ounce bottle- poured a dark caramel brown, clear, with a moderate beige head that dissipated too quickly. Aroma was all caramel and smoke. Caramel and dark fruit taste immediately filled the mouth. Very smooth, very enjoyable. The alcohol content caught me by surprise. All in all, an excellent brew. hayduke (1619), Eureka, California, USA Apr 8, 2008 From a 12 oz bottle this poured a very clear and garnet color with a rich and foamy tan head that lasted a long time and left big lacing rings. Nose of fruit and caramel malts. Flavor is complex with lots of fruit and there is a nice bitter finish. Would like to see this aged, so will put the remaining bottle in the back of the beer cellar and try to remember to pull it out next spring. Svesse (2597), Hässelby, Sweden Apr 7, 2008 (Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm, 2 April 2008) Dark reddish brown colour with brief, beige head. Fruity, malty nose with dried fruit, slightly vinous. Malty taste with notes of dried fruit, caramel and a decent bitterness in the finish. Rather vinous, medium to full body, balanced sweetness. Tasty and nicely balanced, but wouldn’t suffer from a little more character.
