goozen (1061), Leiden, Netherlands Apr 5, 2008 Bottle 12oz.: Red/brown heavy brew with a chocolate taste, from the mile high city. jerohen (1602), Bussum, Netherlands Apr 4, 2008 Bottled from Bierkoning. Clear brown coloured, dying head. Nose of malts and raisins. Alcoholic malty flavour. Not impressive. masonjer (558), Holt, Michigan, USA Apr 3, 2008 Poured an opaque reddish brown. Smelled sweet, with a little booze and brown sugar. Taste was sweet as well, a little grapey, some alcohol and brandy notes. This just didn’t come together for me. I had a hard time finishing the glass. Can’t quite put my finger on why. doubleo (1096), San Diego, California, USA Apr 2, 2008 12oz bottle from SBD. Pours a dark caramelly brown color with a thin, izzy, tan head that fades quick and leaves specks of lace. Smells of sweet malts and a good dose of alcohol. Tastes sweet and raisiny and malty. Alcohol flavors as well. Full body, crisp carbonation. Taverner (826), San Ramon, California, USA Apr 1, 2008 Full O’Malt! There’s some hops - and they are some very floral, grassy, and beautiful hops. But this is a malt-driven barleh wine.
It’s good, and tasty strong. You can taste chocolate, sugar and molasses. Whatever sugar is here obfuscates the alcohol. It’s good, but a bit sweet to be a great Barleywine. bierkoning (5987), La Tropica, Netherlands Apr 1, 2008 Grassy hops with hints of butter and nutmeg in the aroma. Malty, somewhat buttery flavor, dry and alcoholic, with brandy notes and grassy hops, especially in the aftertaste. Not too bad, but a bit too alcoholic to be well balanced. tkimbrought05 (37), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA Mar 30, 2008 So I hear that you should let the barley wines age a little bit, but of course I had to try one. Pours dark with a sweet smell. Very rich beer that tastes of fruit and alcohol. Leaves a nice little burn in the chest that is not at all unpleasant. I’m going to wait a little while to try the next one though. BMan1113VR (2756), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Mar 30, 2008 I liked this one. Marked as 10.2%. Small, creamy, off-whitee head with a murky amber body. Decent lacing, as far as retention goes, the head reverts to just a ring in about 2 and a half minutes. Aroma is of sugar, seeded fruites, and chocolate malts. Flavor is of licorice, vanilla, chocolate, alcohol, coffee grounds and dates. Creamy mouthfeel, light carbonation, noticable alcohol.
