Derek881 (489), Frederick, Maryland, USA Mar 14, 2008 I had this beer on tap at the brewery in Frederick and was very satisfied. The aroma was big and pleasant, with a lot of malt scents, including roasty caramel, chocolate, and coffee, with some hop balance too. A nice, rich and sweet taste with a subtle bitter-sour profile at the finish. It had a thick, syrupy consistency, and good cling, with less carbonation than normal. Overall a very good beer that contains it’s high alcohol content quite well. altonbrownd (1862), Amsterdam, Netherlands Mar 13, 2008 Bottle from Bier Koning. Brown, almost purple body. Slight head. Spicy nose. Malty flavours. Best barley wine I’ve ever had. Taste of chocolate sure, caramel and some coffee. Prickly. High alcohol content and kind of spicy. dpjuart (670), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 12, 2008 3/5/08 at Ginger Man in Texas. 12 oz. bottle. Pours brown with red hues. Nose is little. Caramel, not much of anything. Head is thin and small, rimming white. Taste is malty, caramel and toffee with notes of coffee and a touch of roast, melding into a forced, earthy bitter. Some astingency. Mouthfeel is awesome. Decent, but weird. Kinda spicy. SHANER4 (370), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Mar 10, 2008 Poured a reddish brown color with very little foam. A strong smelling beer, detected sweet malt and also fruity. Taste is a little strong at first due to high ABV. and mellows out through palate and finish. Only my second or maybe third barley wine and this is not as good as SN’s version. A good sipping beer! illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Mar 8, 2008 Poured into a snifter. Dark ruby brown, with a miniscule head that soon disappears. Lacing is intermittent and watery. Aroma is sweet caramel malt and a touch of alcohol. Very malty flavor, with mostly caramel as opposed to toffee. Some alcohol soaked dark fruit. Hops are a little too prominent for this English style, and nothing really meshes all that well. Mouthfeel is markedly better than the rest of this beer. Smooth and full, easy to drink, not too boozy. turbothy (717), Bonn, Germany Mar 8, 2008 Pours dark mahogany with greenish foam. Lots of carbonation. Sweet malt aroma; alcoholic, malty and orange flavour. Beerlando (2284), Orlando, Florida, USA Mar 7, 2008 Pours a muddy dark brown color. Very dark. A small, foamy, cream colored head recedes quickly, leaving minimal spotty lacing behind. Aromas of rich caramel, chocolate, dark fruits, and molasses make for a pretty sweet nose. Flavors are a bit more balanced, with earthen hops joining the malty sweetness. The chocolate component is pretty nice, adding an interesting element to the requisite dark caramel. Medium-full bodied and highly carbonated, this brew is slightly prickly and hot. Might improve with age, though I’m not sure how much. Nice enough brew, but nothing special. hillfiiiiire (283), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Mar 7, 2008 Updated: Mar 8, 2008Dark pour with little head. The aroma is vinous and raisin like. With a strong presence of alcohol. The flavor is really like drinking a wine with sweetness and a fruitiness. It has a nice thick and creamy mouthfeel. The largest shortcoming is the lack of hops. It doesn’t feel like I’m drinking a beer at times. It’s still quite good though.
