Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Pours a muddy dark brown color. Very dark. A small, foamy, cream colored head recedes quickly, leaving minimal spotty lacing behind. Aromas of rich caramel, chocolate, dark fruits, and molasses make for a pretty sweet nose. Flavors are a bit more balanced, with earthen hops joining the malty sweetness. The chocolate component is pretty nice, adding an interesting element to the requisite dark caramel. Medium-full bodied and highly carbonated, this brew is slightly prickly and hot. Might improve with age, though I’m not sure how much. Nice enough brew, but nothing special.

Dark pour with little head. The aroma is vinous and raisin like. With a strong presence of alcohol. The flavor is really like drinking a wine with sweetness and a fruitiness. It has a nice thick and creamy mouthfeel. The largest shortcoming is the lack of hops. It doesn’t feel like I’m drinking a beer at times. It’s still quite good though.

Pours an interesting cloudy red brown with minimal cream-colored head. Sweet malty chocolate bouquet. Chocolate and raisin flavors with a light touch of vinegar. Moderately viscus mouth feel. Pretty solid, but not very session-able.

Flaske. Meget mørk barleywine, med masser af frugt i næsen. God øl med masser af sødme fra malten, men ikke så fantastisk som de foregående øl, men stadig en god afslutter.

Pours a dark brown with a small off white head. Big fruity nose, lots of dark malts, grapes and apples. Light bready yeast aromas too. The flavor is rich molasses and heavy malty fruity thickness. Very sweet on the palate, just pounds at you relentlessly. The alcohol is apparent pretty much the whole way through. Just a litle over he top sweet. The thick molasses flavors are just too much. Needs more balance to really enjoy this brew. A little disappointed.

sampled at kelly’s 2008 hell with the lid off. pours a clear red amber. smell dominated by caramel malts, and some cherry and wood and roasted notes. similar flavor, but with a lot more hops, and some black cherry creeping in at the end. decent.

Huge fruity nose on this one, with deep rummy raisin and plums, coated in a caramel sauce. There’s a bit of a britishy herbal hop skirting the edges of the nose, but its hard to say. Huge almost acrid flavor with alot of heavy chewy malts, sharp and almost astringent, there’s licorice, essence of almond, and heavy caramel. Finish is balanced for something this big. Rounded yet heavy mouthfeel. Long lingering alcoholic finish, but its not overly hot. On the whole, a tad rough and raw, grainy and huge, not very sophisticated but it shows promise. It could age well, I’ll probably keep 2 of my 4 pack cellared for awhile. Deep almost purple color but with not much head, thin but heavily coating lace.
