lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Jan 25, 2008 Pours basically black with a huge beige head in a snifter. Ruby edges when held to the light. From afar this looks like an imperial stout more than anything else. Smell is fruity, and malty mostly with a hint of staleness.
Taste is a bit blandish with a unique roasty character for a barleywine. Now that I read the description, I’m definitely getting the licorice flavor as well. Somewhat of a dull cardboard like finish to it, and mild sweetness. Not particularly offensive, but not something I really cared for all that much, either. Something muted about the overall flavor to me. Average to slightly below average barley wine, to me, but still very easily drinkable for 10.5%, actually. Alcohol is basically non-existant in the flavor. TheGB (40), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jan 25, 2008 Pours dark brown with little head, with little aroma to it. Taste is thick and smooth with raisin and caramel flavors. Drink this if you like a dense barley wine that is smooth without completely assaulting your palate. Pastor (509), Maine, USA Jan 24, 2008 07 vintage Bottle poured ruby red with a fingers worth of tan head tiny partials float around (not to be confused with Belgian floaters)
Strong malt aromas along with raisins, toffee fill your nose.
The palate is smooth almost no carbonation
The flavor on this is same as it smells huge dark malt front note with some sweet fruit and plenty of sugars.
It’s a nice barley wine not outstanding but I wouldn’t turn it down either
MI2CA (1260), Noblesville, Indiana, USA Jan 21, 2008 12oz - Aroma is caramel malt, raisin, plum and alcohol. Pours dark brown with small head and decent lacing. Taste is a sweeter than expected with a lot of caramel and toffee. Palate is sticky and hot with alcohol. Not bad fresh and maybe a little time for the burn to fade will be beneficial.. Chapel (329), Levittown, New York, USA Jan 19, 2008 Dark pout with little head. Almost all alcohol all around with notes of raisin/grape. This smells and tastes like I should be doing shots of this. Maybe i just don’t like Barley Wines. jetboy (32), USA Jan 19, 2008 This would be an incredible beer if I were into fruitier maltier beers. It was stuck in what I thought was a four pack of Double Dog, so I figured why not give it a try. Great color dark brownish with a good head that stuck around. Very plummy, fruity taste with a slight hint of grape. I could taste the alchohol in this bad boy. Great mouthfeel very full bodied. I’m a hop head so it missed the mark for me overall. riversideAK (2648), Shoreline, Washington, USA Jan 19, 2008 Pours a dark brownish color with a marginal head. Aroma of ripe dark fruits. Plums, dates, currants, grapes, and perhaps a touch of sweet roasted malt. Sweet and hot. Notes of fruit come through with a small amount of roast and perhaps a mild bit of candied malt. Thick and sweet. I like hoppier BW’s. I like the ABV, but it might be a bit too sweet. Oh well. ilovedarkbeer (1326), Dallas, Texas, USA Jan 18, 2008 Updated: Jan 19, 2008Pours a very dak color that looks like red velvet chocolate. Small off white head that quickly turns into a little bit of soap on the surface and a nice conssitant ring around the glass. Nose is figs, fruit, raisens, Malt and maybe some alcohol. Mouth feel is medium thickness and has a very soft finish. Taste is malty and of belgian sugar. This is almost like a BW belgian ale hybrid. Intersting but a bit unbalanced in the taste. Nice though.
