pojo41 (315), Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA Dec 26, 2007 Bottle. Decent head that dissipated quickly without much lacing. Pretty good aroma of malt. Flavor of malt and dark fruit with a kind of cola flavor. Also a bit of alcohol heat. Pretty tasty overall. Angeloregon (2024), Portland, Oregon, USA Dec 24, 2007 From a 12-oz. bottle--Poured deep amber-mahogany color with a khaki-beige body with great lacing. Nose of sticky malts and deep resinous hops. Big bold dank brew. Oh my god! vadersnightcap (80), Scotland Dec 24, 2007 Nice beer. Smooth and really well balanced. nice caramel flavours coming from the malt. ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Dec 23, 2007 Bottle. Sweet and malty aroma; a little thin with some molasses. Very dark brownish red, with plenty of particalia visible with held to light. Good-sized tan head. Excellent lace. Sweet, with a creamy mouthfeel. Considerable strength is very well hidden, to the point that I’m wondering if this is really a 10.5% brew. Not particularly mind blowing; there’s just nothing overly distinctive about this brew. It’s pleasant, sweet and easy drinking. But true beer geeks aren’t going to walk into a bar and say, "Whoa! They have Horn Dog on tap!!" Has a bit of a sugar water aspect to it. No way is this brew 10.5% ABV. The Flying Dog website speaks of the brew getting better with age; I had it for several months. Not sure it has enough oomph to matter when put down. The malt/hop meter on the site has this brew all the way on the extreme malt side of the continuum. Not the best choice for making a B-wine to style. Simply doesn’t taste like a b-wine. Bier brauen (210), Bremerton, Washington, USA Dec 23, 2007 Pours a dark amber, with some reddish hues. Aroma is very pronounced caramel malts, raisins, and alcohol. Taste is rich caramel, some raisins, figs, plums, with some alcohol warm and bitter hops in the finish. pretty well done.
badbeer (432), Iowa, USA Dec 23, 2007 Poured into a pint glass. Beer poured a dark color, seeming to be brown with just a slight hue of ruby. Smell is of sweet malt with hints of plum and cherry. Malty taste with hints of dark fruit and alcohol warmth. Mouthfeel is thick and slightly syrupy. Drinkability is good, I enjoy the sipping on it, however, one seems to be enough for an evening, but perhaps I’ll have another. faroeviking (6024), Republica Vikingo de las, Faroe Islands Dec 19, 2007 Bottle. Vintage 07B. Pours a hazy deep red-brown colour with a huge lively creamy light brown well lasting head. Quite sweet aroma of well toasted caramel, toasted malt, ripe fruits, dark dried fruits, alcohol and slight chocolate. Very good rather sticky mouthfeel. The flavour is quite sweet with a good bitter hoppiness, caramel and brown sugar, well toasted malt, dark fruits, alcohol, and some chocolate. Quite sweet bitter finish. Great tasty brew! Slipstream (734), USA Dec 18, 2007 Updated: Feb 18, 2008This company uses wild cartoon labels that look like they were drawn by Ralph Steadman. This one has a graffiti-covered pooch with a horn on his snout. The aroma is spunky, floral, and malty, and the brew is dark with virtually no head. The flavor is strong malt and grains, very sweet but complex. There are touches of coffee, herbs, and hops. A little too syrupy for regular consumption, but it could be a good dessert beer. A good value too.
